La zona Darsena offre la possibilità di muoversi in bici od a piedi per raggiungere le spiagge, la pineta o la zona centrale, compresa la cosi chiamata "Passeggiata", dove fare shopping, assistere al Carnevale nel mese di febbraio e prendere un aperitivo vista mare. Non mancano i ristoranti e i locali di movida che si anima nel periodo estivo e nei week end. La città di Viareggio è molto comoda per escursioni in città vicine come Lucca, Pisa e Firenze.
