Masashi brought me to a very local restaurant for dinner where even the locals won't be able to find. Food selections were amazing and we bonded over Japanese sake and other delicious beverages. After dinner, we went to an even more secluded bar which only sits six people. Throughout the night, Masashi shared his wisdom and purpose surrounding bonsai which was enlightening. The second day was the highlight where he invited me to his garden. Just an hour out from Tokyo and the landscape around his garden was something out from a Ghibli movie. It was so quaint, private and refreshing. It was here where he took me deep into the art of bonsai. Masashi deep passion and love for the art was evident in his teachings. I have personally decided to go back to his garden on a regular basis to learn more about the history/culture/skills on bonsai. Just being at the garden surrounded by trees that have seen the history of time chilling out with Masashi makes anyone's day. SUPER HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I have met few people more generous, friendly, and knowledgeable than Masashi. He was the perfect host and welcomed me into his world with food and friends. The price was well worth such the privilege of studying bonsai with such an influential artist. I came to Tokyo not speaking any Japanese and not knowing any locals, but I'm leaving with such great memories and friends.

Masashi is deeply passionate about his craft and his desire to fuse Bonsai with modern day performance experiences makes his art very unique. His passion is evident from the very first minute you meet him. The trip experience was accurate and when required, was easily modified to make it enjoyable for all participants. Masashi offered to keep and maintain the bonsai specimens we created for those who could not return them to their homeland. I loved that I am already living in Yokohama for a year or so, and therefore got to take mine with me!

Masashi was amazing. He made us feel as though we were old friends visiting his home. He treated us like family not like guests. He showed us places wed never have seen. The bonsai experience was one of the highlights of my life. I learned so much from him.

Masashi is opening new doors by allowing visitors into the mysterious world of bonsai! As a bonsai master who knows how to have fun, he threw the most awesome dinner party, eagerly answering all the questions we had regarding Japanese culture and his personal journey. He put in the extra effort to make sure us guests are bonding too by engaging everyone, and it worked out as we even went for a purikura session together after dinner! On the next day, we saw another side of Masashi, as someone who has so much talent and respect for his art. Visiting his garden first left us all in awe, with the most beautiful trees I've ever seen all in one place. Then the time comes to get our hands dirty with repotting and pruning the bonsai's. We had the pleasure to watch the master at work and it was truly a privilege too to have that 1-1 guidance when working on your first bonsai. Although it's something that can't be fully taught in a few hours, Masashi showed us the elegant and calming nature that the bonsai's have during the session and it only helps you appreciate each of them more when you see one in the future. Special mention to Masa's wife, Mai for translating some terms which are hard explain in English and being Masa's right hand along the way. After half a day of full concentration, we had the chance to rewind with the couple and they again had the most wonderful food and drinks prepared for us, then we spent another unforgettable evening together! So grateful that they are willing to share their time with us and I really recommend to this trip to someone who's looking for both depth and fun in a trip!

This was hands down one of the best and most memorable experiences we've ever had. Masa and his wife Mai, were such cool people and amazing hosts during our bonsai lesson, and made the whole experience so incredible. Our first night began at a beautiful restaurant, and our group quickly bonded over delicious food, drinks and stories, getting an intro to Masa and the bonsai world. We then headed over to one of Masa's favourite bars and got a private room at the top of narrow stairs (something we probably wouldn't have been able to experience without him). Friends of the group and Masa were invited to join us and it became quite the party. The next day we all met at a station where Masa picked us up and brought us to his most charming bonsai nursery and newly renovated cafeworkshop. His nursery was filled with the most beautiful bonsai, and it was located on a picturesque farm with horses, wild cats and baby kittens (who we got to play with!!!). We were constantly being fed snacks, food and drinks by Masa and Mai. Our actual bonsai lessons were absolutely amazing. The two separate lessons introduced us to two different forms of bonsai and were very hands-on. They were such eye-opening experiences to the true art and craft of bonsai and with Masa's guidance, everyone came out with two stunning bonsai trees. We even got our own set of tools to keep. We all talked of our newfound desire to pursue bonsai after that. We not only got an incredible bonsai lesson from a truly talented and passionate master, but got a chance to make great friends with everyone (including Masa and Mai). It is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed!
