What you'll do
We'll meet at Base Nàutica Municipal, Playa Mar Bella, where there are lockers and changing rooms. Don't forget your sports clothes. After stretching and warming up, we'll take the currach to the sea. The currach is a wooden, fixed-seat rowing boat. I will train you on how to row and navigate. We will row along the Barcelona coastline, taking in the views and the sea life of the Mediterranean, and then return to Base Nàutica. There are some great restaurants nearby for lunch, to which I can point you towards.
Other things to note
Bring water, sunglasses, and workout clothes. If you have them, please bring training gloves. If another time suits you better please message me to check availability.

I am an artist and boat builder, originally from Dublin. Barcelona has been my home for 10 years. Currachs are a traditional wooden boat from the west coast of Ireland. I have been building currachs for 15 years and I built a fleet of 6 boats here in Barcelona. I grew up by the sea and began rowing when I was a boy. Rowing is one of the finest strength and conditioning sports on the planet. Each new crew member will learn the basics of balance and coordination, and get closer to mastering timing and technique one stroke and one breath at a time.
We can also fish, swim and picnic, upon request.

Where you'll be
A unique view of the city from the sea - the skyline of Barcelona revealed from a hand-built wooden boat. Rowing on the Mediterranean is a fantastic way to see the city and get away from it. The weather decides which way we go. Depending on the fitness level of the participants, we can row up to 8 kms. We'll spend one to two hours at sea on each trip. Please keep an eye on the weather or message me for alternative hours. Tá failte romhait!
Truly a one of a kind, intimate experience with a handcrafted boat and the ocean. Mark has a kind, open spirit and we felt transported (both literally and figuratively) by this experience. Unforgettable. It was a pleasure from start to finish, full of new knowledge and shared stories. We felt very lucky to have found ourselves there. Also, the physical rowing is quite a fun little challenge to get the hang of, but once you do, it feels great to use your whole body to row in sync with your fellow rowers. I would happily do this again any time.

I was a little under the weather so I didn’t know if I should have even attempted this. But I am so glad I convinced myself to go. Not only was Mark an expert, knowledgeable and friendly but he was so pleasant to speak with as well. He made sure to stop when I needed and helped in any way he could. Definitely book this experience it’s worth it!

A very charming and unique experience from a perspective of Barcelona most likely don’t get to experience. We really enjoyed the good energy and a bit of exercise and great conversation and exchanges with shared with Mark. Rowing with an Irish boat maker in Spain on the Mediterranean Sea, it’s darn cool!

Wonderful way to experience a bit of Irish culture on the Mediterranean coast - Mark’s great and his boats are, too.
The instructions are dead simple (first time rower here) and Mark makes sure you’ve got the mechanics down before he takes you out and up the coastline to see an amazing view of Barcelona from the water.
Do take him up on lunch just up the hill if time allows - food was excellent and the vermouth & conversation weren’t half-bad either ;-)

Mark is awesome. He has a relaxed, fun vibe. He is also a great teacher. He led
us through light stretches and showed us how to get comfortable with rowing movements before we began rowing down the coast. We found it very cool to learn how he built the Irish boat (currach/curragh) we were rowing with him in.
We had a delightful time experiencing Barcelona from the water. Mark pointed out landmarks we were curious about and shared his insights on them. We were able to relax for a bit on the currach to appreciate the amazing weather and breathtaking views from the water.
Mark’s story is also very cool. Looking forward to hopefully checking out his artist’s studio next time we’re in town. Wishing you and your family all the best, Mark! Thanks again!!
