What you'll do

Guests will be collected from their accommodation in the Elounda/Aghios Nikolaos region and taken to a local village to experience the foods, customs and traditions of the area over the Easter period. As the customs for the four days of Easter are different each day, I will arrange to take trips which differ depending on the day. On Good Friday we will go to the village of Pano Elounda for dinner in a local taverna, after which we will join the procession from the church around the village, following the icon and the priests to bestow blessings on the villagers. On Easter Saturday evening we will travel into Aghios Nikolaos for a later dinner, in order to watch the celebrations around the lake. We will have prime seats in the taverna so that we don't miss a moment of this amazing spectacle. On Easter Sunday we will travel along the coast for spit-roast lamb at a friend's fabulous beach side taverna. It will be a chance to mix with the locals and enjoy some real Cretan hospitality. Easter Monday, which is more low-key will offer a trip into the mountains to see amazing sights and to visit a remote plateau. The food at the taverna here is wonderful and the hospitality is warm and friendly. Easter foods will still be on the menu and a very enjoyable afternoon will be had. There will be a chance for a gentle stroll after lunch, to enjoy the fresh air and the flowers.

Julia

I am a cookery writer and cook from the UK, who has been working on Crete as a guide for 20 years. I have many friends in remote mountain areas of Crete who run traditional tavernas and I am familiar with the traditional foods and customs of Crete over the Easter period. Over the years I have found the very best places to visit and to eat, and my reviews on TripAdvisor are 100% positive. In the UK I taught crafts and cookery in the private sector and appeared on Radio 4 and local radio stations, as well as BBC 1 TV on many occasions. I have written several books on cookery, folklore and myths in the UK and am currently working on a book of Cretan recipes, customs, flora and fauna.

Each day over Easter will be different. On Good Friday we will take an evening trip to Pano Elounda, to eat in a local taverna and to attend the service and procession around the village. On Easter Saturday we will take a trip into Aghios Nikolaos to explore the town, before taking our seats at a lovely taverna on the lake to watch the celebrations and the burning of an effigy of Judas.
