What you'll do

We will start with a tour of Captain Bligh’s Brewery and Distillery, and sample a range of the spirits that I make including, of course, the gin. We will then talk about alcohol production and the basis of different gin styles. I will then guide you through the process of making your own unique bottle of gin from botanicals you have selected. Not only will you get to make your own gin, but you'll get to take it home and enjoy your unique creation at your leisure. During the session, we will also discuss some of the history of gin and story of distillation in Australia. As the group size is limited to two, this is an intimate and informal workshop where you can ask as many questions as you like and receive as much or as little assistance as you desire.

Adam

I’m an award winning distiller, and have worked for three award-winning distilleries (concurrently) and am currently the Head Distiller at Captain Bligh’s Brewery and Distillery. I have realised that although many people love drinking gin, its history and how it's made remain a mystery. Not only does it have a historical reputation as "mother's ruin", but because so many botanicals are involved in the making, it's also been used for medicinal purposes - by apothecaries and the like. Not too many people know the fascinating story of gin, let alone the intricacies and the fun involved in creating the drink. I would like to prescribe a remedy for that.

Where you'll be

Captain Bligh’s Brewery & Distillery, 64 Warwick St, Hobart. You will be working on the brew floor, attending the tasting bar, peeking into the fermenter room and thoroughly investigating the distillery/bond store. Keeping in mind, this is a very small family business, so you don't travel far between spaces. A few steps... maybe!
