What you'll do

We'll meet and stroll through the lush gardens and orchards of my garden sanctuary, enjoying the tropical scents of cinnamon, allspice, jasmine, orange blossom, pua kenikeni, and more. I'll acquaint you with over 250 different species of plants and trees, including extensive vegetable, medicinal, and culinary herb gardens, fruit and nut orchards, and small tree forests. You'll learn how the sanctuary is also home to an active farm volunteer worker program, where people live and learn about growing organic foods, caring for animals, and living sustainably. We'll enjoy refreshing garden tea and fresh fruit while we gaze out over the rolling pastures and the deep blue Pacific Ocean to the island of Maui. Kids will love feeding the lambs, horses, or chickens, and gathering farm-fresh eggs.
Other things to note
Please bring your own camera, sun protection, and comfortable walking shoes. Occasionally, you might also need a raincoat.

I moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 1979 to practice naturopathic medicine. For the past 20 years, I have focused on creating Lokahi Garden Sanctuary, a place of health and wellness. I built the sanctuary center, and planted extensive vegetable gardens, fruit and nut orchards and many medicinal plants. I've planted over 250 different plant species and over 800 trees. I so enjoy sharing my passion of organic farming and living sustainability.

Where you'll be

We'll be in historic North Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii, on 10 lush acres with views of the sweeping ocean and the island of Maui. We'll walk the farm, stopping to taste, smell, and touch the plants, drink some tea made fresh from the garden, and meet the animals—an authentic experience.

Richard and the tour were great! He’s a very knowledgeable host - explained Hawaiian history, his property, and plants well and also let us try some fruits as well as smell herbs/plants. Highly recommend!

This was a highlight of our trip! Richard was a superb tour guide with immense knowledge of the plants he is growing. It was extremely interesting, especially as guests coming from another growing zone! Would highly recommend to anyone interested in local food, sustainability, and agriculture.

This was extremely enjoyable and we learned a lot about both local agriculture and the health benefits of the local produce. Also, amazing views from the property.

So happy with our tour! Getting a tour from Richard is like meeting a new friend. He has a casual but very informative style and is easy to talk to. He even gave us some lemongrass and galangal to make with our fish for dinner. The price makes it any easy choice and you’ll learn a lot about farming and local life. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and can easily recommend adding this tour to your itinerary.

Me and my husband really enjoyed our time seeing Richard’s property and learning from him. He’s lived in Hawaii for quite some time and is an active member of the community making him a great guide and someone full of knowledge when it comes to farming, growing & the island in general. We hope to stay in touch and visit again in the future.

Spending the morning at the garden sanctuary with Richard was absolutely beautiful. His land is pure magic - overlooking the ocean with a cool breeze and an incredibly peaceful energy. He guided us through his beautiful fruit forest and shared stories and wisdom about each unique plant. We really got to explore, taste, smell, feel - it was amazing to really experience this land through all of our senses. Richard is so warm, inspiring, and knowledgeable about plants, ecology, and Hawaiian culture. This was a really special experience - not to be missed.
