What you'll do

Remember the old Oregon Trail computer game? Well, we will avoid the rigors of the Oregon Trail by taking a quicker and easier route by train. We will take the Amtrak to the official end of the Oregon Trail, known as Oregon City (OC). Along the way we will contemplate the dangers we may face and hopefully choose our occupation and companions wisely!

Once we arrive in OC, we will hear daunting stories of the pioneers while exploring the End of the Oregon Trail Museum. Next we will venture into downtown and learn about the unique architecture of this pioneer city. Treats may be had at OC’s best chocolatier. After some free time, we will make our way up America’s only vertical street to the Promenade, a walkway that leads to America’s 2nd most powerful waterfall. Learn how the falls were important to both local indigenous tribes and the settlers of the 19th century.

After taking choice photos of the falls, we will wander amongst the historic homes of OC, including that of John McLoughlin, the father of Oregon. Our final stop will give kudos to modern Oregon history, by imbibing in a handcrafted beer (or root beer!) at my favorite Oregon City brewery.
Other things to note
Please be prepared to walk 4 to 5 miles. Wear proper clothing for the weather. Bring a hat or sunglasses. Bring a comfortable carrying bag or backpack, especially if you plan to pick up souvenirs.

Hi I’m Carrie I was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve been an Oregon tour guide for the last 4 years. I have both a passion for and a BA in History. I’ve traveled around the world but there’s nothing I love more than the beauty and history of home, right here in Oregon.

Where you'll be

We will take the Amtrak to explore the town of Oregon City. We will visit the museum, downtown, uptown, Willamette Falls, and the historic homes of Oregon City. We may also stop at a hidden viewpoint and/or a nature park. We will visit my favorite chocolatier and brewpub in Oregon City for a taste of Oregon. Time for lunch will be included on weekdays. After the tour, we will take a Lyft back to downtown Portland.

We wanted to get out of Portland for a bit and do something educational with our kids, ages 9 and 12. Carrie's Oregon City adventure provided just that! The length of the trip was perfect, the meeting time and place was clear, and Carrie took care of the rest. She is passionate about history and she spends her free time learning as much as she can so that she can pass along her knowledge to her guests. Not only did we have a good time and learned new things, we also felt like we got to spend the day with a friend.
