Rome, Italy

Experience hosted by Eva

2 hours
Up to 10 people
Hosted in English, Spanish, French, Italian

What you'll do

Everyone goes or at least tries to, visit Pompeii, so we wondered: why not Ancient Ostia, so much closer, so well preserved and even bigger than Pompeii. So if you are in Rome and do not wish or cannot go to Pompeii well, this is the experience for you! Ostia, in latin, mouth, was the first colony of Rome, literally at the mouth of the River Tiber, on the beach. Ostia soon became an important city and developed parallel to Rome. You will meet your guide at Ancien Ostia train station (very easy to reach!) and together you will head towards the archaeological site. Walking on the City main road you will first go through its necropolis (Cemetery), then the City gate, as Ostia unveils itself in front of your eyes you will admire the Theatre, the Forum (City Center), the main temples, its first christian church, Thermal Baths, laundries, public bathrooms, private mansions and apartment blocks, a caffetteria, a bakery... an actual Roman City, the way it looked and the way it lived! Once the pier of Rome this incredible site will give you a full understanding of how roman cities truly looked, on how the average romans, not only the emperors, lived.

ADMISSION TICKETS NOT INCLUDED

Hello, my name is Eva and I am part and leader of a group of professional tour guides in Rome. We are all licensed tour guides, most of us have an art history or archeology background. We got together hoping we would be able to share our passion for our wonderful city. We wanted to create different itineraries, built and though from guides, for foreigners, whether it is first time visitors or Rome passionates. We started offering experiences on Airbnb the past year and have, since then developed new itineraries. Come and discover Ancient Ostia with us!

Coming, as we did, during covid times, we expected that things would be quiet. Eva, very helpfully, suggested we meet at 9am, so it was cooler - which made our trip even more enjoyable (definitely recommend a morning visit). The fact that the site was quiet was great for us, as we had time to listen, ask lots of questions, without the usual tourist crowd around. That helped. This is sad, though, as Ostia Antica deserves better - more tourists who probably don't realise how easy it is to get there. Eva was a great host. We had a great time and I would definitely recommend a visit, and with Eva too ! Nothing too much trouble - and (best of all) we learned something ! (We did listen, Eva!)

Valentina was extraordinary. The information was given in an organic way, as a part of an interesting conversation! Friendly and attentive, having her as our guide made the visit really special. Grazie mille

Well organized and informative visit to Ostia Antica. Valentina was our guide and I was lucky enough to have a tour with only one other guest. Easy trip out on the train followed by a thorough tour of the many sights of Ostia. Valentina carried a iPad that was filled with maps and illustrations that really helped us to understand what we were seeing. With ruins that may have less than one floor left it really helped to see a reconstructive drawing that showed the entire building. She was really well informed, friendly and funny and we really enjoyed our time together.

This was a fantastic trip and we are very glad that we chose this way to visit to Ostia Antica. Valentina was a wonderful guide for our family of three and patiently answered all of our questions from the moment we met at the train station in Rome. It was as if we had our own personal archeologist! She tirelessly took us through the amazingly large city and unveiled its treasures one by one. We genuinely enjoyed her company and truly appreciated what we were seeing.

Eva operates and organized the tour and Giulia P. was our tour guide for the trip to Ostia Antica this morning and they both were wonderful. Giulia is an archeologist, knew a wealth of information about the site and brought printed materials & illustrated reconstructions on an iPad to help us understand what the ruined structures looked like when they originally stood. My wife and son were the only guests on the tour and never felt rushed. Giulia also helped us with a restaurant recommendation in the area of Ostia Antica after the tour wrapped up.
