If the schedule doesn't match you, please feel free to let us know. We are always happy to be flexible about changing starting time, date and so on!

Let's take a bike ride with us and see the local spots where you would never reach without the local guide.

The bike tour is organized with my co-host Peta, an ex-bicycle messenger, we both speak English fluently. We provide you a sports-hybrid bike and the instruction about the bike before the tour. Even if you are not an experienced rider, you can enjoy this relaxing bike ride! This tour normally goes around 25 to 30kilometers in 4.5 hours. The ride is on relaxing pace with some breaks.

We start cycling in a city called Odawara which is located under the beautiful view of Mt.Fuji. Despite the city is just 30 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen the bullet train, it features the historical constructions and the nature of typical Japanese country side such a Japanese-styled old house surrounded by rice field.

We really want to share the local history and nature with you!

Welcome to our bike ride experience page!

We are called Local Experience Japan http://www.localexperiencejapan.com

We have been providing this spontaneous bike ride down to the local atmosphere since Spring 2018 and more than 700 guests have participated it so far.

I am Hayato, the owner of Local Experience Japan and I also run a hostel (http://www.plumhostel.jp) in Odawara since 2016. I graduated from a university in New York. I would like tourists from other countries to enjoy their stay in Japan with local people. My co-host, Peta, had been a bicycle messenger for 5 years before he came back to his hometown Odawara and has enforced this tour since July 2018. He also has experienced working in New Zealand. We're knowledgeable and look forward to showing you Japanese nature and culture in real local life through this bike ride.

Where you'll be

The tour starts at our office near Odawara Station in Odawara city, 80 kilometers(about 50miles) away from central Tokyo. We enjoy cycling alongside the Sakawa River, appreciating the view of Mount Fuji on sunny day and local nature, such as the flowers and rice fields. We always try to pick a best route to enjoy the local attractions from, such as Odawara Castle, a beach, a historical Japanese house. The route can be changed by the weather.

My friend and I both live in Kanagawa and were taking a weekend trip to Hakone, and booked the bike ride to start off our weekend. The bike trip was great, we got to go around Odawara and see Fuji up close. The weather was perfect so that really helped. Peta the guide was really nice and easy to talk to. I hadn't biked in a really long time but the ride was super doable. They took our measurements beforehand so we got the right size bike, which was important for me since I'm super short. We stopped at an old farmhouse and got to walk around inside (which you wouldn't get to do in more touristy locations in Japan), then a sake brewery where we could buy some of the best sake I've ever had, and then a local Japanese bakery. Absolutely no complaints about this tour. They are going to be opening a hostel as well with a brewery below, so in the future after the bike tour you will be able to have a craft beer afterwards. 10 out of 10.

This bike ride experience is truly one-of-a-kind! Our amazing guide Peta took us to a bunch of places that we wouldn’t have found on our own. Some of the places we got to see included a 300-year old traditional Japanese house, a sake brewery (with delicious sake to try when you get back), and a really nice bakery. The scenery was beautiful everywhere we went and the company was great. I highly recommend this tour and I will definitely be booking again when I come back to Hakone!

Peta was a great guide, sharing from his own experience and passion about cycling as well as cultural knowledge of this area, where he lives. We got a great view of Mount Fuji and the trail was mainly separate from the road. A unique chance to get the small-town feel and see local traditions.
