Enjoy Japanese tea in Shimokitazawa

What you'll do

We'll meet at Shimokitazawa Station and walk to the famous Tsukimasa tea house. I worked there before, and I will demonstrate how to brew tasty Japanese tea for you. Then you can brew it yourself, and we'll enjoy teatime with Japanese sweets or snacks, talking about the history of tea and the many ways to enjoy it. If you want to buy tea leaves, tell me your favorite tastes, and when you like to drink it. I'll recommend different kinds to suit you. There are also tea accessories, which you can buy as a souvenir if you want. Afterwards, it's time to stroll around the town. You will be amazed by the way the complicated narrow streets are like a maze. At the end, I will take you to some of my favorite shops if you like.

I've been a Japanese tea instructor and Japanese language instructor for nearly 15 years. I learned the tea ceremony in my youth, and that encounter with tasty Japanese tea changed my life. The taste was amazing and surprising, so I fell in love with Japanese tea. I started at the tea house in Shimokitazawa, and I love the comfortable atmosphere of drinking tea with my family, friends, or even people I've just met. So I'd like to enjoy it with you.

Where you'll be

Shimokitazawa is near Shibuya and Shinjuku, and is a very popular part of town for young people. The cityscape is complex and attractive, so it often features in movies and novels. The tea house I will introduce you to appears in a novel 'Moshimoshi Shimokitazawa' by a best-selling Japanese author 'Yoshimoto Banana'.

My mother and I had a wonderful time tasting tea with Tomoko! She is incredibly kind and truly knowledgable about Japanese tea. Tomoko imparts a broad range of wisdom while also making the information and flavors very accessible, even to even the most foreign palate. I would recommend this experience to anyone looking for a peaceful and relaxing insight into the delicately simple intricacies of Japanese tea and tea culture.

Tomoko is very kind and friendly, she is extremely knowledgable and it really is lovely spending time with her! After the tea tasting was finished, she took us on a short walk around Shimokitazawa and we stopped by an Ume (plum) shop, and she also pointed out lots of great restaurants and shops of interest. Thank you Tomoko!

Informative and fun, definitely a great experience if you're at all interested in tea and drinking it. We were near the Shimokitazawa station, which, itself, is a fun area filled with small shops. The format is a short primer on some different Japanese tea types, followed by tea tasting. Tomoko-san was very friendly and easy to talk to and had plenty of advice for travelers, tea-related and otherwise. Definitely recommend.

It has been a nice experience! Tomoko is a very kind and charming person, she has explained us interesting things about different kind of tea and how to prepare and taste them. She has also brought us in a wonderful park where you could also eat some Japanese specialities and admire some cherry-trees and plum-trees in flower. I suggest this experience!

This was a wonderful experience. We learned how to make 3 different teas and try some snacks that go with the teas. The flavors are so different and each tea is unique. Tomoko is very knowledgeable and a good teacher. The tea shop was wonderful and you were able to get many teas and supplies there. I look forward to making another visit to the tea shop in the future. I would highly recommend this experience for someone interested in trying teas for Japan.
