Flower lesson at old Japanese house

Tokyo, Japan

Experience hosted by Masashi

90 mins
Includes food, equipment
Up to 4 people
Hosted in English, Japanese

What you'll do

Let's have fun time by using your five senses!
Having lesson at old fashion Japanese private house will be UNFORGETTABLE memory!

This is what you will experience!
1. Learning history and culture of Ikebana (with pictures). It's deeply intertwined with Buddhism, samurai etc.
2. Learning difference between Japanese and foreign flower arrangement (with pictures).
3. My short demonstration.
4. Designing your work!
5. Taking picture of your work, Japanese tea time, and house tour.

It's my pleasure if you could gain little deeper insight of Japan by using your five senses (for example, touching flowers, seeing colors of flowers, listening to sound of scissors or silent moment by facing with flowers, taste & aroma of Japanese tea and sweet).

After the lesson, please enjoy house tour!
Walking or lying on tatami (straw mats) , taking your shoes off at the entrance sounds interesting. I will also tell you about history and functions of my house.

I believe that chatting during the lesson, tea time, and house tour, we can become good friends!
Other things to note
Transportation fee
*If you would like to charter the lesson for your private use (10,000 yen per person), I'll offer 2nd lesson by using the same flowers.

I started flower arrangement when I met my "Master" Ms. Makiko Chiba; my role model as human being.
One day, she asked me "Why don't you try flower design?" I said, "Yes!" 'cos I respected her and wanted to try what she'd done for living.

I'm working as professional designer for 13 years.
It's always challenging!
Because every time, I use different flowers and vases to make works for different venues.

It is my pleasure if guests gain deeper insight about Japanese culture and custom by taking this lesson. It's so amazing to design limitless creative works with limited numbers of flower.

Masashi was a wonderful host in his home and incredibly generous with his time and expertise. He gave us a brief primer on the development of Ikebana and its link to Japanese history and culture, which allowed us to have a deeper appreciation of both the art and the Japanese way of life. Because it was Girls Day in Japan, Masashi picked some symbolic flowers for the lesson and also gifted us some sweets which we loved ^_^ thank you Masashi, we would love to come again and would highly recommend this experience!

We can not recommend the Ikebana lesson with Masashi enough. It was just the most magical afternoon. He was extremely generous with his time and skills. The experience was varied and well rounded - not simply an Ikebana lesson but also a history lesson, a cultural exchange and a meditation. He was so helpful with further advice and tips for what do do and see on our stay in Tokyo. We left feeling refreshed and have found since we are noticing aspects of Japanese culture we would not have known or understood before. Do not hesitate to book!

If you like old Japanese culture, this will be a once in a life time experience for you. Masashi is an expert at ikebana and great at explaining the history of flower arrangements starting 15BC. He is also knowledgeable in traditional Japanese cultures like tea ceremonies and samurai, presenting it in a entertaining and insightful manner. So ask him anything :) Masashi chooses different flower according to seasons, I’ve never done flower arrangements before but this was super fun.

Masashi was fantastic! He was very easy to understand, funny and kind. I had no experience with ikebana and he was very helpful and I learned so much about the Japanese culture, too. It was so interesting to see his home and visit with him. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I highly recommend!

Masashi 很熱情的招待了我。在門口有我專屬名字的接待牌。因為不懂日語,英語也不好。他特意一邊寫漢字一邊講解。講解細緻到位。對日本花藝有了更深的瞭解。
