What you'll do
We'll walk around the former French concession, from the old neighborhood to the modern streets. We'll walk by the birthplace of the Chinese Communist Party and learn about the history and culture of the quickly changing city. Then we'll stop at the first restaurant in the Xintiandi area and start with scallion oil noodles with three to six different toppings. You'll discover Shanghai's food culture by walking through the backyards of traditional stone-gate houses (Shikumeng), which soon will be demolished due to ongoing urban renewal projects. Relax with some Chinese tea such as pu'er, oolong, and longjing green tea away from the touristic crowded central CBD. In the middle of the tour, we'll visit a local microbrewery and sample some IPAs, pale ales, stouts, or pilsners. Meanwhile, you'll discover the Chinese drinking culture by sampling a shot of one of the most widely consumed spirits in the world: baijiu. The last place is a kind of hole-in-the-wall mom-and-pop joint that serves wontons, pan-fired dumplings, soup dumplings, and other side dishes. Our walk will end close to the People Square.

As a native of Shanghai, I am passionate about introducing my city to people who are curious about Shanghai’s authentic local cuisine. I'm also running a culinary tour company and planning to open a restaurant.
My co-host Lu is a big craft beer geek and a musician playing at former French Concession at night. He's originated from Shangri-La and lives in Shanghai for almost 10 years.
Other experiences we offer:
Authentic tea and dessert tour;
Chinese craft beer tour.

We had a fun, informative and filling afternoon with Jim, wandering the Old Shanghai and discovering real hidden gems. Jim’s tour was recommended to me by a friend and I will in turn be recommending his tour to all visitors and newcomers to Shanghai.
