What you'll do

Conquer a mountain with a Montain Climber

We’ll hike Nevado de Toluca, an extinct volcano and Mexico's fourth-highest peak. We’ll walk through a large forest on the way to the crater’s two lakes, Laguna de la Luna (Lake of the Moon) and Laguna del Sol (Lake of the Sun). Jagged ridges and sharp peaks along the crater rim punctuate the dramatic landscape.

The park is home to 18 registered archaeological sites where sunken offerings, ceramics, and sculpted stone have been found. I’ll share insights into the region’s pre-Hispanic culture, including why this volcano and its lakes were so important to them.

At the end of our trek, we’ll refuel with quesadillas and local coffee at a traditional restaurant. You’ll have the option to learn how to cook your own quesadilla, or simply relax and eat ones that have been prepared for you.

I’m an expert mountaineer and founder of outdoor training and adventure sports company, TORI. I’ve climbed all four of Mexico's dormant volcanoes and Argentina's Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside Asia. I've also climbed Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps, and many other peaks around the world. I'm always excited to share the thrill of hiking with others.

Where you'll be

Nevado de Toluca National Park is a two-hour drive from Mexico City and a stunning setting for hiking. Firs, pines, and other trees grow here. Alpine meadows flourish above the tree line, until you reach the crater’s moonlike terrain.

We had a wonderful experience hiking Nevado de Toluca, something we never could’ve done alone! It is intense, bring lots of water and prepare for altitude, but we were in great hands with Tori. It’s beautiful and a great respite from the city if you’re here a few days.

Our hike to the top of the crater was an experience we’ll never forget. It was gorgeous, from the walk through the forest at the outset, to the ridge with expansive views and finally, up to the crater’s rim. Tori is an excellent guide who looked out for us each step of the way. The altitude was tough - we climbed to 4,300 meters - but always felt we were in very capable hands. The quesadillas at the end were a delicious finish to a superb day.

After days of exploring Mexico City, it was a gift to be expertly whisked away to an entirely new place. Edith picked us up and drove us through dark mountains to sunrise over farmlands with our goal in sight. Her love and respect for Nevado de Toluca were clear in the way she nudged us awake to see first light turning the peaks purple and in the moment when she paused to ask permission from the mountain for our time there. When we began climbing, she was attentive to our health and comfort, checking our oxygen levels, even offering me her gloves when my hands proved too cold for the sensor to work. I had a lot of trouble with the altitude and she was with me the whole way, demonstrating breathing techniques that would help. The destination was literally breathtaking and there’s no way I could have experienced this challenge and reward on my own. Don’t hesitate to sign up for Edith’s experiences. This is her passion in life and she shares it powerfully.

She shared with us her knowledge of the region, mountain, and culture. After the hike she took us to delicious outdoor restaurant where we shared some good stories and laughs. I highly recommend Tori.
