What you'll do

Water has always been the common thread linking Paris to its history. Until 2016, the Georges Pompidou Expressway, cutting through Paris and following the right bank of the Seine, was open only to car traffic. Today, it is closed to vehicles, and is dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists—anyone may benefit from strolling along the river and under the bridges. Our walk will start in Bastille, a lively district of Paris, once the heart of the furniture industry and witness to numerous historical events. We will follow the Arsenal Harbor, a leisure port, to reach the Seine. We'll walk up and down to the famous Bridge of the Arts, where so many couples have carved their initials on locks. We will listen to numerous stories about this part of Paris, from the Town Hall esplanade—once a feared place of executions and looters—to the success story of the once-large department store, The Samaritaine. For amateur musicians, we may stop from time to time on the riverbanks near a barge and sing songs about Paris together.

I was born in Paris, and I have always been passionate about sharing the multiple and changing aspects of the city, and the multiple stories under every stone. In a such a busy and noisy city as Paris, a stroll along the Seine enables us to enlarge our vision and stay in a quiet environment.

I originally booked this experience for the first day of my brother’s arrival in Paris as his initial introduction to Paris. His flight was delayed and Samy was accommodating in rescheduling to another day which happened to be my brother’s last day in Paris. It worked out beautifully. This experience is like visiting a friend who loves his native city and loves history and is eager to share that with you. It is a stroll yet the path is intentional with key points that Samy wants to hit. So he is working with a plan and at the same time it is conversational with Samy answering all of our questions. And he delivered us to the end point of the stroll within the timeframe specified for the experience yet without us feeling rushed during the stroll and allowing time for breaks to rest (which I needed due to recovery from surgeries on ankle and knee in the past eight months). This experience would have worked as a first introduction to Paris. As the last of days touring Paris, it helped cohere all that we had learned from the prior days and was a wonderful ending to my brother’s trip.
