Kobe, Shioya, a quaint fishing town

What you'll do

SHIOYA is my small hometown, a quaint peaceful fishing village nestled in a valley. It takes about 15 minutes from Kobe, 40min from Osaka and 70min from Kyoto by JR train. It's surrounded by beautiful mountains and the sea, its historical and has a lovely quaint market street.

On meeting at JR SHIOYA station, I'd like to give your own Japanese name card to you. It would be useful for communication with friendly local people.

First, let's go to the harbour. Enjoy a photogenic view of the area. You can see Mt Rokko, Awaji island, the pearl bridge, etc. Also, my fisherman friend waits for you. You can sample Nori (seaweed) if you like.

Then through the tunnel, we'll go into SHIOYA town. I'd like you to know about real Japanese daily life by walking through a temple, a shrine, a cemetery, etc.
Also, enjoy the narrow market street and I want to share my local vision with you, visiting a barber shop which has over 100 years history, a tatami factory, and our beautiful heritage, the Guggenheim house when they are open.
Let's enjoy more than 8 different yummy Japanese snacks & drinks.

Have fun talking with local people & a super smiley environment !
Other things to note
Comfortable shoes and clothes for walking are recommended.

Children, non-English speakers and people who study Japanese are welcome.

Hi there, I'm Sumile.
I love travelling and used to work in a tourist company as a tour leader. I have been all over Japan and the world, about 45 countries in total.

I prefer visiting local backstreets and markets to the UNESCO world heritage sites and main famous streets because I noticed that's the best way to understand real people's lives.
On each trip, meeting and talking face to face and knowing about their lives and cultures deeply and directly was a wonderful experience for me.

On the SHIOYA tour, I'd like to introduce you to Japanese real lifestyle and make it fun and enjoyable!

This tour was a refreshing change of pace from the usual commercial tours. Sumile walked us around town. Unfortunately some shops were closed for the holidays but we managed to visit a pizza parlor, bakery and a cafe/bar. The nori factory though was in full production mode and we got to see the manufacturing process up really close. This is a must-go tour. You will not regret it.

I really enjoyed this experience, and highly recommend it. Shioya is a great town, full of friendly people living life at a steady pace in tune with the local seasons. Its narrow streets hold all manner of curious architecture, well-tended gardens, and charming business establishments. We met local grocers and bakers; craftsmen, fisher-mongers, fishermen, and barbers. Even the land has a certain elegance to it, with the town nestled cozily between two mountains on the one hand, and the calm waters of the inland sea on the other. Near the water stands the fishermen's wharves and the train station, and above it all (or most of it) stands the local shrine and temple, and a handsome old Guggenheim house preserved by forward-thinking locals of another time. It seems appropriate that the town's name includes the word for "salt," as this place has a genuine salt-of-the-earth quality about it. Sumile-san is a great host and a wonderful person, and she offers a passionate and wonderfully-designed tour of her town. Give it a try! A great location and a great host -- it doesn't get much better than that. Enjoy your walk; I did :)

Sumile is a wonderful guide. We really appreciated Sumile’s personal touch with stories and photos of her own family and their lives in her delightful home village of Shoiya. It was a joy to be in her company. We traveled in from Kyoto and Sumile was very helpful in organising our train timetable so that we got to the rendezvous station very easily. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and gained insight into life out of the big cities. A plus coming over from Kyoto was that we could also take the time after the tour to see some of Kobe - I recommend the cable car from ShinKobe to take in the views from the mountain behind Kobe and to explore the world class Herb Garden. Sumile provided us with this recommendation and helpful directions.
