What you'll do
Japanese woodworking is known for its precision, delicacy, and beauty. My dream is to make Japanese woodworking more accessible to foreign people. I personally find great enjoyment working with wood, and I would love to share my experience, knowledge, and skills with the world.
In this experience, you will learn how to use Japanese woodworking tools. I will explain the purpose of the tools and show you how to use them. After the explanation, you can also experience using the tools.
*We also offer a full day course, "Learn Woodworking with a Carpenter!" (includes visiting tool stores and learning how to set up woodworking tools).
Other things to note
If you have specific woodworking tools you want to know about, please tell me in advance. Please arrange for your own transportation to and from the workshop.

I am a traditional Japanese carpenter with almost 20 years of experience, and I run my own construction firm in Kyoto. I specialize in renovating traditional houses. My past work includes working for the Ise Grand Shrine, the spiritual home of the Shinto religion. I enjoy working with wood using traditional hand tools and Japanese joinery.
Where you'll be
This experience will take place at my woodworking workshop. It's a space where you'll find the tools and materials I actually use and where you can feel the carpentry work.

We had a wonderful afternoon with Takami and Dylan. Takami was able to show us the main tools used in traditional Japanese carpentry. We even got to use some of the tools at the end of the experience. We wish we had more time to spend with them and highly recommend this to anyone visiting Kyoto.

I very much enjoyed my time with Takami and learning about Japanese wood joinery with him. Anyone can learn to appreciate the intricacies of Japanese joinery, but it’s even more enjoyable if you are a carpenter or woodworker, and seeing the painstaking lengths Japanese go to in creating their furniture and homes.
