■ Marshall Arts and Real Sword Experience
Most of the time in the course you will receive a sword skill training as real martial art. Usually, Iaido cutting with a real Japanese sword takes a year-long training. Our program, however, is minimized the lesson for beginners to receive safely in a comprehensive way. Our coaching of 3.5 hours is the minimum time we have pondered. Learn Japanese Budo on sword skills understanding the manner and spirit before actually get to grip a real katana to try cutting a tatami roll.

One hour ride from Tokyo station, Kamakura is a favorite spot for tourists for its historic atmosphere, cultures and nature. We are offering various courses for visitors focusing on authenticity. This specific program is a shortened, light version of our long full day course for VIPs. The venue is a 600 hundred-year-old Zen temple, once visited by renowned novelists back in Meiji period. And now, NBA players, ambassadors and famous artists have visited here through our actions. This temple is not open to tourists but to us, the NPO mentioned above.

■ You will use an authentic Japanese sword
You are going to use a real, authentic Japanese sword here at the last stage. It's not a mock sword for practice or a stage prop. It's a deadly weapon and said to be a spirit of samurai. Please keep it in mind and promise to handle with respect following the lecturer's instructions.

■ About Iai and Tateh
When you learn Japanese sword practices, there are two kinds. One is called Tateh, which was conceived as a staged action with rather showy motions. The other is Iai, an older martial art for battling skills and killing actions. It’s a way to be a stronger samurai.
In other words, Tateh is more entertaining and theatrical, while Iai is seriously focusing on cutting the enemy down. All the actions in Iai are sophisticated to be minimum and straightforward, aimed to win at a close battle. If you want to feel a real mindset of samurai in medieval times, we recommend Iai.

In a quiet templ, the moment with a real sword swinging in your arms will surely be your special memory.

We offer you this short program at a special rate now, and we will raise it back at regular price soon. So we sincerely ask you to upload your feedback review.

I am hosting an NPO called ZIRITSU. I am into Zen and Iai-do, Japanese sword practices. I want to share the samurai spirit with you focusing on the authentic place, material and lecturer in Kamakura. I made a short 3.5-hour program of the real sword experience for you so that you can stroll the area before or after visiting us in the temple exclusively reserved for you. Zen influenced Swordsmanship, Tea ceremony, and even Flower Arrangement. Our Iai-do lesson highly regards the old Zen/Samurai spirit. I hope you learn and enjoy this unique lesson. An excellent photo occasion as well.

A professional interperter will attend. Yutaka Takayama, a national certified guide and 1st class medical interpreter. TOEIC score 960

Where you'll be

As you might have heard, Kamakura is a crowded tourist spot. But here in Kigen-in, a 640 year old zen temple which is the temple venue you can enjoy a tranquility and its garden reserved only for you exclisively. This serene accord is the best and the exceptional experience I can offer you to share. Please come to enjoy with your friends or family. It's worth to take time to leave a big city like Tokyo to find a historic feel of nature and culture of old Japan.

We enjoyed our experience however to make it more genuine and less restrictive, we felt that these small areas could be improved: 1) the use of a basic kimono for photo taking sessions could have been provided free of charge (not as an additional rental or an after-thought to use the interpreter's kimono) 2) we felt that we were cornered into selecting 2 options when it came to photography and that we were forced to post on 3 social media platforms in order to retrieve photographs that they had taken of us. An Airbnb experience should allow guests to use their cameras at free will. 3) The katana master could have shared more stories about Samurais to heighten the suspense and made the storytelling aspect of the experience more engaging.

鎌倉の由緒あるお寺で座禅を行い、心穏やかになったあとに、着物を着て居合体験が出来ました。本物の日本刀で、藁をきることができ、非常に貴重な体験をさせてもらいました。

I was excited but wasn't too sure what to expect when I booked this experience. However, this was the most unique experience and highlight of my trip to kamakura. The host and the translator were both very professional and friendly, who made sure I enjoyed my time there whilst also helping me learn about katana and the proper way to use the traditional Japanese weapon. I would highly recommend this unique experience to anyone visiting Tokyo.

Unique experience! First of all, the lesson takes place inside a Zen Buddhist temple and the whole surroundings are amazing! The experience itself is very interesting, at least. I mean, you don't get to use a real katana sword every day! You start with the basic techniques: the position of the body, the holding of the sword and the cutting movement. Then, you go through a series of exercises that will get you ready for your final test: cutting a previously soaked in water tatami. The hosts were really nice, they were patient and they answered all of my questions. And to top it off, you also get pictures taking during the activity and a slow motion video of you cutting the tatami. If you want to feel like a samurai, I really recommend this!

We were completely alone in a beautiful temple and garden. No other people! The training before was interesting and comprehensive. I feel I acquired a new skill. I guess you need it to properly handle a katana. The chop was exciting. The katana is an antique! Feel privileged to be allowed to handle it.
