What you'll do

Upon arriving at the Tea Zion House via the free shuttle from the train station, we enjoy some fine organic matcha and a local treat from the tatami room overlooking the tea fields . Feeling good from the matcha we start our walkabout.
Surreally beautiful tea fields, historical sites, local architecture, mountain streams, and a 1400 year old sugi tree, all await us. I will be explaining all things tea and nature, while answering any questions you may have, as we stroll through the tea fields and forest on public and private paths. After the walkabout we return to the tea room for our private tea session/party with the best locally sourced natural tea and simple vegan bento/additional sweets that compliment the tea perfectly. After the tea party we board the shuttle back to the train station before rush hour begins allowing you to enjoy the rest of the day relaxed.

A quote from a past guest :

"A tour with Greg is not a mass produced cookie-cutter spiel that you often experience with tours, but is rather an authentic local experience that feels like a conversation with a friend. It's not just a tea picking tour, it is an intimate discovery into country life in Japan."

Lets's Teafari!

Hello everyone!
I am a certified Uji tea sommelier (lic.# 28320) and have 20+ years of Japanese tea brewing expertise. I process hand crafted small batch tea of the highest quality, and I am a purveyor/connoisseur of the finest naturally grown tea Japan has to offer.
With my acquired tea skills, 18+ years of wisdom as a tour company owner, and my antiquated :) degree in anthropology, I have created for you an experience that is focused on the tea we will enjoy together and the nature surrounding us, all in a private setting .

Where you'll be

The center of Wazuka is our destination, the prime tea growing area of Uji. Close to Kyoto and Osaka via Japan Rail (JR).
From the Tea Zion House, located in the heart of Wazuka, we enter the vibrant tea fields and forests.
Relax in an authentic Misawa built Japanese home, before and after the hike, while enjoying your bento and very special tea with the fabulous views from the tea room. Come see the daily life of Wazuka up close and personal.

This is a unique and wonderful experience for me and my family. Greg is hospitable, exceptionally passionate and very insightful about Japanese teas. We will recommend this tour to our friends and family when they visit Japan.

Greg's genuine knowledge, excitement and curiosity about the world of tea, matcha and the local community around him is contagious and sets the tone for what was a truly magical day in Wazuka! I highly recommend this experience to all -- even if one have little to no background or appreciation for tea.

Had an incredible time hanging out in Wazuka with Greg. At first we were skeptical to be going on an excursion in Japan with an American, but he is such interesting guy with unique insights and commentary specifically because he is not Japanese. However, he is fully immersed in the culture and knows all the local "tea" (pun intended). He is so passionate about the topic of tea drinking and growing, but not strict about it either. He seems so fascinated and curious about life, it was really such an awesome and magical way to spend time outside of a big city. We took an amazing walk about the tea fields and nearby forest and sat down for sweets and drinks in his home. Note: It is a bit of a trek to meet him! Very simple train ride but does require about an hour from Kyoto. We went on our last day in Kyoto which was too much traveling in one day just FYI.

Greg is an expert of tea but he’s just sharing everything he knows like talking to a friend! The whole journey was like how he described, a tea party, and I had had a great time with everyone sharing about the tea history, Japanese culture, everything about tea and life! Thanks Greg, Sophie and Alex who were in the same tour for such a fantastic and fruitful experience I have ever had in japan!

If I could, I would give Teafari 6 stars. This experience was the highlight of our two-week trip to Japan. Greg is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and laid-back. We were welcomed at the train station, treated to hand-picked tea, a tour of the fields (which are incredibly beautiful), a sit-down bento lunch at Greg's home, then a trip to the local co-op before getting dropped off at the station. The whole experience was amazing and we would do it again in a heartbeat. Highly recommended!
