What you'll do

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade printing paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of which enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of of the session! Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words from me on my printmaking career and a round the table 'meet and greet' from everyone to begin the workshop. Stage 1 - We will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper. Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, showing you how to use multiple blocks and reduction-cutting techniques to create more complex multi colour prints. Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing various colours. Stage 4 - I'll be collecting everyone's individual prints, wrapping in sheets of tissue paper and rolling up into tubes for safe passage home. Please feel free to leave your email addresses at the end of our workshop, so I can forward on a tools and materials list from my suppliers I use for the studio.

Learn more about Alex

Alex

I am a practicing artist, and my passion for woodcut printing began 15 years ago whilst studying printmaking on my Degree at University of Brighton. In 2006 I completed my Masters Degree in printmaking at Camberwell - University of the Arts London. Teaching this ancient process is an experience I find continually exciting, and working with new printmakers to help them achieve brilliant results and learn new skills is so much fun. Everything made in the class is by done by hand - all woodblocks and prints are the individual's to keep, with tubes provided at the end of the workshop for prints to be safely taken away.

Where you'll be

We will all be working together in my art studio around a large workbench, which is the perfect creative environment for lots of fun and focus in engaging, high-impact woodcut art in my 900 square ft studio. The high ceilings, amazing light and excellent facilities make it a very special place to be - producing an array of experimental prints! Meeting curious and newly creative people in sharing this unique experience is so important to the day.

More tips

Please bring any visual material that may be of inspiration - photos, drawings, patterns, text, books etc. I do have a lovely library of books on printmaking, plus a brilliant portfolio of prints other workshops. Aprons will be provided but please do wear sensible work clothes as it may get messy!
