What you'll do

Honey is a remarkable food and ingredient. The taste, viscosity, colour and aromas are linked directly to the floral sources available to the bees. In this gourmet food tour you will join a local food and wine enthusiast, beekeeper and bon vivant on a honey tasting, overview of the lifecycle of a colony and then suit up and visit a beehive!
The honey tasting provides a unique insight into the different tastes and textures created by Hamish’s bees as they collect nectar from different plants at different times of the year. Hamish harvests his honey using the Flow Hive system which allows you to take small amounts of honey at a time without disturbing the bees. In turn we get to taste honeys collected weeks and sometimes days apart and compare them. All of this alongside leaf tea or plunger coffee and freshly baked scones. By building our knowledge of these important pollinators we are helping build a sustainable future for the bees and for all of us.

You will need fully enclosed shoes to be able to do this. During winter (April - September) we don't open the hives but get up close to observe the bees coming and going and view them through specially designed glass hive windows.
Although the group size is limited it is possible to host a larger group; I simply bring along another beekeeper and they will open another hive. Likewise you can request a date.

I am a keen beekeeper and got my first hives at school. I love my bees for their work pollinating the food we eat, their environmental impacts, through to the fascinating way they communicate and interact. And they make awesome honey! I am a strong advocate for inclusion, the rights of LGBTIQA people and acknowledge that these experiences take place on Gundangara lands and that sovereignty was never ceded.

This experience was wonderful, apart from feeling like I acquired a very valuable practical new skill, I learnt a lot of history and science. This was well worth doing.

My wife and I recently joined Hamish for a morning filled with beekeeping. It was such a fun experience, and I learned the most interesting facts about bees as well thanks to Hamish’s thorough explanation of the hive and the role that bees play in our world. After getting into our beekeeping suits, we wandered down to the hives, which were ‘buzzing’ with activity. We loved the hands-on experience of being able to not only sample multiple types of honey, but also hold the frames filled with bees, and explore inside the hive. We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone!

We really loved this beekeeping experience! Hamish was passionate and lovely, and we learnt lots. It was incredible to be able to observe the bees close-up and see some of the things Hamish told us about in action. The fresh local honey was delicious, and it was really interesting to see and taste the differences between batches of honey from a few weeks apart. We definitely came away with a greater appreciation of what bees do. Highly recommend!
