In this experience, you will be challenged to socially engage as you break bread with strangers, participate in a discussion with our legally Blind Ambassadors, and experience an intimate music in the dark showcase. There will be no distraction of your visual conditioning, social etiquette, or cell phones. The Blind Café does not try to perfectly recreate blindness. Instead, it allows people to interact, trust each other, and experience music and community in an entirely new way. In the dark, there are no uncomfortable glances, no self-consciousness about what you’re wearing or what you weigh, and no distinction between the sighted and the blind.

Please be advised that you will be in 100% darkness for about 1.5 - 2 hours. 100% darkness means you won't be able to see your hand in front of your face and it can be very easy to become disorientated. But don't be discouraged! We’re excited to share this most moving and powerful experience in the dark with you.
Other things to note
Please be advised we will be in 100% darkness. It is very easy to become disoriented. You will be in close proximity to other people’s space. Please be respectful and use your voice when needed.

Rosh, an American singer-songwriter, attended a dark cafe in Reykjavik, Iceland while on tour in 2007. After engaging socially in the dark, he designed an intimate music listening and dinner experience in 100% darkness, music performed by his band Rosh & the Blind Cafe Orchestra. In 2010, Rosh met Rick Hammond, a blind poet and Richie Flores, a blind singer-songwriter and invited them to contribute a blind awareness Q&A to the program. And so the social impact Q&A with legally blind staff completed The Blind Cafe Experience.

Wonderful night experiencing an evening of darkness. Hosts lead the evening sharing their personal experiences with us and allowing time for a Q&A. Highly recommend.

We felt like the place settings, the chairs, tables, and food were cheep and thoughtless for the price we paid. Could have skipped the part where we were asked to share our experience with the table once light was introduced into the room—it seemed as if they were trying to stretch out the experience—fill time. My wife made a connection with one of the staff members, but we were asked to take our conversation into the lobby—seemed a bit rude since it was an event about awareness and making connections. The food really was horrible. I understand this is not a food experience, but you have to put more effort into the food. Forget trying to be inclusive—give folks some meat for that price. Not to mention we were unable to get refills on our water. Our entire table wanted more water and I don’t think anyone got it. The chocolate and kombucha felt more like an opportunity for someone else to sell there product than a part of the experience. Just made me more angry about the price I paid.

Cool experience! The hosts were wonderful and it was a thought provoking experience. The only downfall was the food. It was cold and not very appealing. For the price, I was expecting something better.

My husband and I absolutely loved this experience. The hosts are all charismatic and great at making you feel comfortable and mentally prepared to be in complete darkness. The group who puts this together puts in a lot of work. A volunteer told me it takes 20-30 hours to set up the space for it! It was an out-of-this-world experience and one that I felt really broadened my perception by letting me step into a sensory experience of someone else's life. I don't think I've ever had the opportunity to drop into someone else's life in this way. I love the format of sitting with a group of people to dine with and getting to do a Q&A with our blind hosts about blindness or partial blindness. The music portion was really interactive and just lovely. I would do this again or volunteer next time they come back. Such lovely spirits and vibes, these ones. Heartily recommend. Everyone could benefit from getting to live someone else's life that is different from their own even if its for a few hours. This event does just that and in a way that is really welcoming, warm, and compassionate.
