What you'll do

Yes, winter floats are possible. Please make an inquiry first before signing up! The right conditions are important. I'll bring you on an adventure down a local creek in a canoe. I have most everything you'll need. We'll meet either at my house or creekside. You are welcome to bring your own kayak if you wish. I can usually have the shuttle back to your car all set, but once in a while guests may have to drive me the ten minutes back to my car.

This experience is an hour and a half... ish... long paddle/float down the Rondout Creek. We end at the Outpost Barbecue where you can buy lunch or dinner if you wish.

Each season varies a bit, but provided we've had enough rainfall, although this creek is shallow in some spots, it can be floated without hitting the bottom at all. At times, especially in the summer, be prepared to step out onto the slippery rocks and float your boat over a shallow section. Jun, July, Aug and Sept, you will get your feet wet, so please bring some footwear that you can walk on slippery rocks in moving water with. You will need to get in and out of the canoe 2 or 3 times depending on your steering.

Departure time is variable so please inquire FIRST before booking.

As a naturalist and a "people" person I can chat with you about the nature we see (birds, critters and trees) as well as local history..... or we can do a quiet float.

I've spent a month canoe camping in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, paddled 350 miles from Burlington, VT to Long Island and have done all the local creeks and rivers, many times and in all seasons.

As a licensed NYS outdoor guide, former canoe/kayak sales rep and fisheries biologist, I know most of the plant and critter species we might see, as well as have the experience to know how to be comfortable and safe along the way. I love to share my skills and knowledge with other folks with a goal of just showing them a great time, or teaching them about the nature in this area, usually both.

Where you'll be

We'll be in the Rondout Valley west of the Shawanagunk Ridge which is home to both the Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park. The Rondout Creek is one of the small rivers that New York City dammed in the early 1900'ds to make reservoirs for NYC drinking water. The reservoir is only about 15 miles upstream of where we'll be paddling. The creek runs along a historic D&H Canal and many remnants can still be seen along the trip.

Kris seemed like a solid and sincere guy with passion for nature and biology. He was right down my alley. I would join him again in a second.

Canoeing with Kris was a fun experience. There were 5 of us, all adults, and we paddled on the Wallkill River near New Paltz. He was very accommodating, knowledgable, and kind. It was hard work for us to paddle because the current was low, so we ended the trip a bit early and he graciously made that work even though it wasn't his original plan. He told entertaining stories, too. Thanks, Kris!

This was an amazing and fantastic experience. Kris was warm and welcoming to me and my 8 year old son, and despite some challenging weather (obviously not Kris' doing) we had an incredible time on the creek - saw some wonderful birds (bald eagle, great blue heron, lesser green heron) and my son was beyond excited to be in a kyack by himself (with us in a very near by canoe) and to catch three fish on his own. Whether you want an explination of the whole ecosystem of the creek, or just need help with gear and logistics, I cannot reccomend doing this with Kris highly enough!

Nothing better than a biologist for a guided canoe trip in the Catskills region. Fabulous day on the river; learned a great deal about the area and its natural resources. Highly recommend for individuals, couples, or groups. Kris is accommodating, generous and experienced making anyone feel comfortable in this beautiful area.
