What you'll do

We'll begin in the gatehouse, chapel, or rear garden, where we'll treat you to wine, cheese, and a brief history of this more than 200-year-old cemetery. Then we'll stroll the grounds and take a peek inside the public vault built in 1835 and view the funeral artifacts, unique headstones, and inscriptions. We'll see famous and infamous "permanent residents," such as march king John Philip Sousa, J. Edgar Hoover, Vice President Elbridge Gerry, DC madam Mary Hall, LGBT pioneer Leonard Matlovich, and countless others. We will view historic preservation projects currently underway, and learn the difference between different grave markers and their unique iconography, all the while enjoying the rolling grounds of this National Historic Landmark.
Other things to note
You should be comfortable with off-leash dogs that are onsite as part of the cemetery's membership-only, dog-walking program. However, guests are not allowed to bring dogs to this experience.

As a historic preservationist and the President of the Historic Congressional Cemetery since 2012, I've come to know hundreds of stories of those interred here, from residents to presidents alike. I've initiated dozens of major preservation projects and I raise the $1.1 million annually needed for the site's upkeep. Along the way, I've even portrayed a "resident" or two as part of our fall Soul Strolls fundraiser. I enjoy providing an interactive experience and answering all the questions people have for those of us that bury people as part of our job in the funeral industry.

About the organisation: Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery

Historic Congressional Cemetery maintains, restores, celebrates, and raises much needed funds for the continued preservation of a 35 acre site with nearly 70,000 interred individuals, an active burying ground that was once left completely abandoned as recently as the late 1990s.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery.

Where you'll be

We'll be within the private historic Congressional Cemetery, established in 1807, where we'll visit the buildings, stones, and residents not usually available to the public.

If you can make this happen do so without hesitation.... Paul was incredibly welcoming and provided endless amounts of interesting and fun facts....would highly recommend doing a tour of this hidden gem... only comment would be that the posted picture featuring a “civil war” re-enactment was deceiving (in a positive way).... perhaps a more non-military photo would be more appropriate....highly recommend this experience!

Paul was an incredible host at his cemetery. It was an awesome wine, cheese and cracker spread to start. Paul is incredibly friendly and had lots of stories to tell us about different graves or areas of the cemetery. A fun, quirky experience.

Every trip I plan, I try to do something off the beaten path. This experience was so highly rated and seemed like an excellent opportunity to get to see another side if D. C. This tour was quite possibly the most entertaining and enjoyable experience my family has had. Paul is an amazing host and storyteller. We had so much fun learning about the "residents" of the cemetery, especially the more controversial ones. We had a couple of teens in our family who weren't too sure about the tour but both said it was the highlight of our trip. I have to say that this cemetery has the most positive vibes. You will certainly enjoy your visit.

A walk through this historic cemetery is a truly unique experience. Paul is great as a tour guide and just happens to be the guy in charge. He is knowledgeable and he always had something interesting to share along every path we walked. As historic as the grounds are, he really brought it to life! I highly recommend a visit!
