ETNADOC - Natura ed enogastronomia

Zafferana Etnea, Italy

Experience hosted by Giuseppe

4 hours
Includes food, drinks, transportation
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English, Italian

What you'll do

Our start point will be Zafferana Etnea: there we will visit our ancient apples garden in Contrada Cassone, at 1600 mslm overlooking the stunning Valle del Bove, understanding the amazing land formation process that provides our unique soil and weather. Back at the footsteps of Etna we will start our vineyards tour from the ancient and almost legendary Contrada Spuligni-Cancellieri in Zafferana (520 mslm), one of the latest survived in town.
After that we will head towards Milo, homeland to Etna Bianco Superiore and we will visit Contrada Caselle (850 mslm) with the unique ancient authentic Carricante vines. Our last vineyard is located in Castiglione di Sicilia, in Solicchiata (600 mslm)..

..the tour includes some surprises on our way ;-) just wait for it.

We will end back to the ancient Palmento in Santa Venerina where we will have a sicilian style apertivo in a beautiful panoramic terrace (at lunch or dinner time, depending on your needs) and a wine tasting of my own family production.

No matter if you are a pro winelover, a curious or just an amateur: I will let you soak in the comprehension of vinegrowing, winemaking and basic tasting skills.
Other things to note
This tour can be challenging: changing weather in aut/spr, various altitudes and temperatures, twisty roads. Bring with trekking or closed shoes! This is not going to be a boring wine tasting.

I'm Giuseppe, a true volcanic guy, so passionate: I'm a workaholic designer and creative director based in Catania, working all around Italy.

I also run a little boutique family winery on Etna since I represent the 6th generation of vinegrowers and winemakers in my family. I grew up as a wine and gourmet cooking lover: my grandfather teached me how to make good wine and have care of my home land.

I love meeting people who wish to discover sicilian food and cultural heritage, helping them exploring my home territory and sharing my knowledge about wines, traditional recipes, nature.

We had a great time with Giuseppe. He was kind, spoke great English and really took the time to understand our needs so we’d have a great tour. He took us to multiple vineyards (all from his friends) his mom cooked us a delicious typical Sicilian meal and everyone we met along the trip was lovely. We finished at 4.30 instead of the 1 PM planned end time so you can tell he’s doing this out of passion. Sometimes it felt a little bit improvised and in the end we didn’t taste that many wines (2-3) but the day was still perfect and lovely. If you’re in the Etna area, GO!

My experience with Giuseppe was beyond expectation. Giuseppe was genuinely kind and giving. He spent longer hours than the time was listed. He clearly loves the land and wine. I learned so much about their ways of wine production and the history of the land. The country drive through the vineyards with the ocean and Etna views were spectacular. I highly recommend this experience.

What an amazing experience! Giuseppe is a incredibly knowledgable, passionate, 4th generation wine maker. He is part of the movement to restore ancient family vineyards in the Etna region and return them to production. He is particularly passionate about the native white Carricante grape. We toured multiple vineyards before ending the day at his family's ancient palmetto/cantina and sampling wines, including one he made 10 years ago when he was 18 that was AMAZING. He also laid out a beautiful antipasto spread of locally produced cheeses and sausages. And then he made us take all the leftovers home! Giuseppe will undoubtedly be a very famous wine maker one day. You will not forget this experience. One side note: we were with him for 7 hours. There is just so much to see and talk about. So while the experience is advertised as 4 hours, it is longer - so plan accordingly. We will definitely tour with Giuseppe again when we return to Etna, which we do almost annually.

Giuseppe is a great guy full of passion and knowledge. However this tour was all over the place (not in a good way) in subject matter and logistics. It took way longer then expected (5 hour). With no tasting or food on the agenda till the end. We also only tasted 1 and a half wines as the 2nd wine offered was bottled the week before. It was a shame we spent so much time/money. Nothing seemed unique after hours of looking at vineyards. It was really a bad experience and we hope he spends some time fine tuning this.

Giuseppe was an exclusive guide! He really worked with his heart and soul when he provided us with extensive and interesting information regarding the concept of wine-production on Sicily and on the slopes of Etna. Giuseppe made us feel like extraordinary guests (we were treated as royalties), I can highly recommend his services to everyone who is thinking about visiting Sicily!

Very special tour. This guy is full of passion, heritage, and love. He was a perfect host, and showed us alot of things that we wouldn't of got to see otherwise. Big respect to this grape master.
