Hike the legend of Arthur's seat

Edinburgh, United Kingdom

What you'll do

We start our hike from the base of the seat heading off the beaten track to a part of Arthur's seat that not many tourists know about. It provides a snapshot of Arthur's seat geologic history as well as what the Scots believed was a fairy house. We then travel through the hunter's bog and see where the whisky smugglers would set up shop. We head up the stairs known as the Zig Zag where you can see where the top gets its name, the lion's head. Along the way I will share with you how the Arthurian Legend ties into the seat and tell you about the many fairy encounters people have reported in the area. Once at the top, I will show where a settlement was discovered and let you soak in the views. On the way down I will show you where the man who inspired Merlin, Arthur's wizard, supposedly lived and tell you why you are safe from creditors. I will then take you to the ruins of a 15th-century chapel and finish with one of my favorite stories from the seat. Make sure to bring good shoes with grip and a water bottle.
Other things to note
This is a medium level hike with long steep sections so packing light. Please give 24 hours notice to cancel. It can also get quite slippery in the wet so you must confident on your feet. If I cancel the tour on the day due to bad weather I will contact Airbnb on your behalf for a refund.

I have been a tour guide in Edinburgh for 7 years doing walking tours of both the Old and New town, Castle tours, Horror tours, and Harry Potter Tours. In my free time would hike Arthur's seat to enjoy the views. After learning a few quirky facts from the locals I started to do my own research and found that every hill had a name and a story to tell. Once I knew the stories behind Arthur's seat, it became more magical than before. I would love to share all the history, myths and folklore that makes Arthur's seat so special.

Where you'll be

We'll head first to Cramstone Quarry, a place geologists love, then head through the hunter's bog where James IV used to hunt. Up the Zig Zag to the Nether Hill where settlement archaeologists found evidence of a settlement, then to the summit it'self where the wild Macrass stood there ground against the British army. Down the Dresses where the people in debt would set up camp and too St Anthony's Chapel that faces the sea.

Super lovely guy. Great story teller. Great experience and I would highly recommend. He was really helpful getting me and other people up. But also he was really hygienic carrying sanitizer and making sure we were all safe.

My 10 year-old daughter and I spent 5 days in Edinburgh and did 3 tours in total. This one was the best. David is highly knowledgeable (you can tell he has done thorough research and genuinely loves his topic), he is very professional, and a wonderful person to connect with in general. Definitely one of the air-b-b experiences that scores high internationally.

David is an absolutely phenomenal guide, and the area couldn’t’ve been more picturesque. We had perfect weather for our hike, so I’m sure I would’ve enjoyed myself just as much with rain! David shared so many stories about the area, about history, culture, geology, and folklore - it was exactly what I was hoping for. The hike was moderate, but we took plenty of breaks for stories and enjoying the captivating views. David does a lot of different tours - My recommendation? Book them all!

Great hike. Decently challenging and recommended for those who are in decent shape and can walk on loose surfaces without risk of injury. Very informative and interesting.
