What you'll do

We'll meet in my second home, a very cozy flat in Berlin- Kreuzberg and start the experience with a nice coffee and a little round of getting to know each other.
Bread is one of the most important staple foods that we eat every day and which is nutritionally very valuable because of the carbohydrates, fiber, minerals and trace elements it contains.
In this experience you will not only learn how to bake your own German bread you also get to know a part of German culture and their traditions. In Germany, for example, it is customary to give salt and bread for moving into a new apartment or at the wedding. For luck and blessings and against evil.
I will prepare a pre-dough the day before, which we then process together into a finished bread. All operational steps are still learned in this course. After learning the pre-dough, we will add the remaining ingredients, learn kneading techniques and observe the secret of the yeast.

We prepare two different breads types. One typical German bread with sourdough, out of rye flour and one mixed bread with spelled and wheat. You get both recipes for to take home. I choose this two types of bread because I like to eat whole grain bread with a bit of white flour and dark bread with sourdough.

German bread is not only popular worldwide, but also unique in its variety. Due to scarcity of raw materials in times of need, environmental influences and wars, a baker always had to stay creative. In addition to my studies I worked as a Neapolitan pizza maker and since that time I am baking bread as well. I enjoy working with my hands, with the dough and the simplicity of making things that have fallen into oblivion.
German bread is a piece of culture and tradition that you will experience in this discovery and take home as a recipe.
We will bake a very healthy, spelled-wholegrain bread, without sugar.
I have studied natural medicine so all kind of healthy food is part of my profession. In this sense lets start baking.

Great family tour run by two lovely women who grew up on either side of the Berlin Wall. Cleverly designed to keep children (and their parents) active and engaged, using a good variety of games, toys and even a handmade book. Valerie and Regina clearly love children, and really enjoy what they do. My children (7 and 9 years old) took to them immediately, and were very interested in all of the activities. None of us knew a great deal about this piece of Germany’s history before the tour, and we all learned a great deal. The children repeated a lot of the information during the remainder of our time in Berlin, which tells me they really took it all in. Thank you Valerie and Regina - we wish you every success!

We just had an amazing tour with Valery and Regina, our kids aged 4 and 7, were super interested and excited to learn about the life inside and outside the wall. Really cool experience if you want to get your kids ( and yourself ) be immersed in a cultural journey walking alongside the wall.

History comes alive. It was a wonderful experience we had today. Both, Valerie and Regina, had a very good way to communicate with the children and have been well prepared. They used a lot of old GDR- stuff to explain their own history, Regina used to life in the east part of the city. It was exciting and fascinating and time was running fast. Thank you very much, this experience is highly recommended for children of all age.

Despite changing weather conditions, Valerie&Regina made the tour enjoyable. My 12 years old daughter appreciated it and l did also, thanks to very simple stories and images.

We had such a lovely time today with Valerie and Regina. They worked really hard to bring the complex history of Berlin alive for the children.

Valerie and Regina are both wonderful tellers of the stories of their very different lives (one in east Berlin, one in the West) and the lives of those around before, during and after the Berlin Wall’s existence. They have created a book with illustrations that allows even young children to engage and better understand the years of separation. My 8 and 10 year olds both came away speaking of the differences, the wall, the inequality, routes to escape, etc. Both women are very engaging and appreciate all the questions you may have. Highly recommend as your intro to Berlin with kids!
