Write Korean with a calligraphy artist

Seoul, South Korea

Experience hosted by Yoon

2 hours
Includes drinks, equipment
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English, Korean

What you'll do

You will experience Hangul—the Korean alphabet—at this calligraphy workshop of which I am a member of the team. Your teacher will introduce the calligraphy supplies, such as the paper, brush, inkstone, and inkstick. You'll learn how to grind an inkstick on an inkstone, and also, how to hold and handle a brush. After some practice drawing basic lines, you will start writing Hangul calligraphy. You can write any words you want in Hangul, and don’t worry if you don’t know any Hangul words. Your teacher will give you samples of what you might like to write and help you while you are practicing. It's also a good idea to think of the word you would like to write before you come to class. The calligraphy artwork you create will be a special souvenir of your trip to Korea. It will also be a great opportunity to understand and experience Korean traditional culture.
Other things to note
Different teachers run the class on different days. On Fridays, the instructor will be Da eun. On Sundays, Joo Yeol will offer all classes in English.

I am a member of Geulssiteo, a place to do calligraphy. We offer one-day calligraphy classes and my calligraphy artist friends have been invited to carry out this experience. We all met at the Sungkyunkwan University calligraphy club in Korea and currently work together doing Hangul calligraphy classes. We have our own roles at the workshop. Joo Yeol is a Korean Hangul instructor. He is fluent in English, knows Kanji well, and can speak a little Japanese. Da eun is a Korean Hangul instructor. She is not fluent in English, but can introduce calligraphy theories and how to write in English.

My instructor was Da Eun seonsaengnim. She showed a PowerPoint presentation explaining the history and theory of Korean calligraphy and then patiently guided me through practice exercises and then a project to complete and take home. She can speak some English but is also good at expressing things by demonstrating. I have never done any calligraphy or eastern brush painting before although I read and write hangeul and it was strange and exciting.

If you are interested in calligraphy or would like to have a relaxing time then I can recommend this experience. Da Eun showed us the proper technique, answered questions and let us try different styles. You drink tea while practising and in the end you can take your results home.

I really enjoyed myself from the interaction with everyone and from actually doing calligraphy. I'm thinking of going and picking up a ink stone and brush.

A really zen time making caligraphy and drinking tea. Happy to have booked and learned. I would re-book should I become better in Hangul. :D

Was introduced into a bit of history about calligraphy as well as getting lots of practice. Yoonkyung was constantly trying to help out and give tips on how to correctly write. Yoonkyung's English is also very good, great class for anybody.

This was an awesome experience. The teacher is very nice and patient. The vibe of the room is cool with lots of calligraphy on the walls. You get tea served as you learn first about a bit of the history of calligraphy and then get to try it out yourself. We asked him to show us some cursive calligraphy as well (not for us to do but just to watch) and it was very impressive. Overall a great experience.
