What you'll do

This small group workshop is all about finding the freedom to create a shibori textile that you will cherish for all time. I offer a short intro to natural indigo and describe the process of shibori binding, an ancient Japanese technique. Next, we explore itajime shibori folding, binding, and clamping the fabric.

As soon as our textiles are folded and tied, they are ready for a dip in the natural indigo dye vat. After 1-3 dips in the indigo vat, guests are ready to open their bundles to reveal the stunning Shibori patterns as we watch the indigo turn from green to blue as they hit the air revealing the spontaneity, magic, and beauty of indigo Shibori.

You will up-cycle 2 pieces of your choosing using natural indigo and learn about how to create an organic indigo vat, all surrounded by the beauty of our Miracle Mile dye garden. Everyone will have their own materials, be spaced over 6 feet apart and all social distancing measures including masks will be in place. Mask and bandana blanks will be available to purchase. I am throwing in a FREE yard of kimono fabric.

Customize your wardrobe sustainably and beautifully, or make a piece of frame-able art for your wall.
Other things to note
If you are new to indigo and shibori, simply know that a beginner can have fantastic results and often invent original never-before-seen patterns. I will guide you to create something special.

I am a painter and textile designer with 15 years of art education experience. I am inspired by world arts and culture. Recently, after a visit to Arimatsu, Japan the birthplace of the Shibori, I founded my textile design studio and fabric line: Hilary L Hahn. My passion is connecting people, entrepreneurs and travelers who want to explore natural indigo to create a functional environmentally-friendly work of art such as a wall hanging, scarf or tea towel. You will gain the knowledge to create handmade Indigo Shibori patterns of your own.

Hilary is a great teacher and generous host! So kind and welcoming: she had every detail ready, from tools to tea and donoughts...That, and the green environment made the experience really pleasant. Excellent hospitality, fun activity, and we got to bring 2 beautiful dyed items home per person! Me and my niece Olga had a great time, sharing with new friends and learning new techniques. I absolutely recommend it. Thanks Hilary!!!
