Interesting historical walking tour of a the relatively small Chinese community in London. The personal stories of our guide, Laisheung, were a highlight, as was the delicious dim sum meal coordinated by China Exchange.

We had a wonderful tour guide who was very knowledgeable about the history of Chinatown, and the various notable citizens that lived and worked there in the past couple hundred years prior to it becoming Chinatown. She was also very friendly and welcoming. The Dim Sum lunch was delicious also. It was just my husband and I signed up for that day so it was like a private walking tour. Our only wish was to hear also about the history of Chinese immigrants to London and perhaps some stories about Chinese residents or culture in England. The China Exchange organization is doing a good job in developing this tour and I hope it will be able to add more of this history also.

Illuminating and interactive This not just a tour with a Chinese flavour (the lunch was fabulous!) but also includes a history of the area, taking in all sorts of colourful London stories - from the visit of the Beatles to the use of the area by Henry VIII as a hunting ground. Our tour guide, Hong, was not only knowledgeable about the Chinese influence and symbolism (she’s a Cambridge grad, no less!), but brought the tour alive by interacting with everyone and making us all feel very welcome. It didn’t feel rushed and the lunch was plentiful in an upmarket restaurant, allowing lots of time to enjoy the excellent food and company (I'm a bit picky about spicy food, but it wasn't spicy at all!). The booking process and "meet and greet" all went very smoothly and we enjoyed every minute of our time.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of going on a London's China Exchange tour of Chinatown and Chinese people migration history. Put it simply - it's a great well informed tour with loads to learn about London's Chinatown streets. Having been to Chinatown a number of times before - I was amazed about the deep history of the area such what is like before it became Chinatown and the changes since. Didn't know that in its history, there was a Chinese mob boss! Our tour guide was really enthusiastic and engaging with our group (her recent PhD was in culture preservation). As well as talking, she had loads of pictures for us to guess what it was or the relevance of them to China town. It is clearly well researched and thought out. The timing is also good - at late morning/early lunchtime Chinatown wasn't heaving so you didn't have to fight through the crowds to follow the tour guide or get pushed out of the way when they're talking. The end of tour lunch was really delicious . We had more than enough dim sum and in London's hottest summers on record, a sheer delight to relax in an air conditioned restaurant. Great value for money and would recommend you book soon. Think the tours end in early Sept - get your space now.

The tour was brilliant! I have lived in London for many years and been to Chinatown numerous times but I learnt so much about the area's rich and colourful history. Just by looking up and around we saw so much more. The volunteer guide deserves a mention, she did the whole tour with no notes and wove her own personal story of arriving into London from Hong Kong in the mid-sixties aged 12. We could see Chinatown through her eyes which added so much to the experience. To top it off we had delicious Chinese food in a local restaurant which was such sociable end to a lovely tour. I would recommend it to any Londoner or visitor to the city.

You'll never see Chinatown in the same way after this tour. Lai, our tour guide was genuinely enthusiastic and passionate about the history of Chinatown from the infamous buildings to the history of the lunch we had - this tour was amazing! She shared her knowledge of how Chinatown came into being from the swinging 60's to modern day via a whole host of inspiring and radical changes. She shared her own experiences of Chinatown from her time as a child coming into Soho with her parents and how she and her family finally felt at home and belonged when Chinatown was officially recognised in the 1980's. This is more than just looking up and down at buildings with facts and dates in mind, it's a breathing living tour of real human stories. Added bonus was that of having a sit down family style authentic lunch to end the tour with. I highly recommend this tour, whether you're a Londoner who's been to Chinatown a thousand times or a visitor who wants to get an insight into the Chinatown of the past. Do not miss out!
