Making your own olive oil

Afantou, Greece

Experience hosted by Emmanuelle

8 hours
Includes food, drinks
Up to 8 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

The experience takes place only from early November until the end of December, the season of the olives. After a welcome drink, we visit our land where we have our 96 trees and we explain the whole process of how to make the olive oil and other delicious preparations. Then, we pick up the olives together and we take them to the olive press. During the afternoon, we have a typical cold snack with Greeks products. While the olives are in the press, we observe how they will be transformed into olive oil. Then we prepare some big olives following different recipes, some olive pasta and explain about others products with olives oil. To enjoy this, a testing of the products ends our day. As a memory, you receive a bottle (100ml) of fresh-pressed olive oil.
Please note that the experience is during the winter, from early November to the end of December. It is suitable for children.

We moved to Rhodes in 2019, my husband from Rhodes, I and our children. Our farm is located in a big field with 93 olive trees. We make our own olive oil, tapenade and different olive's preparations. We love to share our experience and explaining the whole process of making the oil, while picking up the olives, and then during a visit at the olive press. We worked both as guest relations, we enjoy to welcome people from all over the world , and you'll leave with a souvenir and great memories.

This was my second experience with this host. I visited Rhodes a second time last week due to it leaving a great first impression on me. Emma and her husband are very nice people with great backgrounds. They made the experience very personal for me. The actual process of picking olives myself was quite fun. Their home is as amazing as they have their own farm and animals running around. They are people I definitely plan to keep in touch with and have recommended to others if they were to ever visit Rhodes.

Emma and her family were the most incredible part of our Rhodes experience. A storm had wiped out the harvest from their own trees, so they found someone on the island who had trees, took us there, and even drove us to a production facility to be sure we understood the entire process, that the weather didn’t allow them to provide in the way they intended. They could have cancelled, but instead provided the most incredible experience, lunch, and hospitality that went miles beyond even our greatest expectations. Truly lovely people who we now call friends. We’d give it 10 stars!! Thank you again for making it happen, despite the circumstances!

Right from the start, it was a great experience. We got to be part of a local family for the day. Emmanuelle was fantastic. She arranged to pick us up from the cruise port. We went to the family farm and house where she welcomed us with refreshments and snacks. We got a tour of their property and played with the animals before starting to pick olives. We worked for an hour or so picking the fruits, and then went to have a nice family style lunch that she and her family prepared. After a nice lunch, we went into the kitchen to learn how to make a tapenade. We made it together and enjoyed tasting it. She sent us home with a sampling of some of the family's handiwork. Oil, soaps, tapenade. After we finished with the house, we made our way to the place where they process the olives into the oil. Due to weird circumstances, the factory wasn't open, but Emmanuelle was such a great host, it didn't matter. She made us feel very welcome and went above and beyond to help us have a terrific experience in Rhodes. If you like adventure, a little work and a unique experience, check out this experience. Just know that you will get a bit dirty and it is a very casual day. We are very happy we did it. Hopefully you will feel the same way.

It was a real pleasure to explore this small farm and enjoy the spectacular view while learning all about olive tree cultivation and olive oil production. Emma and her husband were warm and unhurried, eager to welcome us to their world. Highly recommend.
