I was born and raised in a city on the White Sea coast of Russia. I grew up cooking all sorts of food such as borscht, herring under a fur coat, and olivier salads with my mom. I would spend summers in the Ural Mountains region with my grandmother making dumplings and baking shangi. Cooking is a huge part of my identity.

I moved to Portland about 4 years ago to pursue a great opportunity. Little did I know that my first language would be the third most spoken one in the area, much less that Portland would be home to one of the best Russian fare restaurants in the whole nation.

Where you'll be

When I just moved to Portland, a lot of my friends were recommending to check out this restaurant. I kept putting it off because, I must admit, I was skeptical about the quality of the food there. I mean seriously - what would Portlanders know about Russian food?

Well, to my surprise, I was amazed by the flavors of dishes I had. Everything tasted authentic as if I was back home in Russia. You can't find a better place in the US for Russian fare.

Not only is Stanislav (Stas) from Russia, he embodies a deep love of the culture in the very fibers of his being and that passion infuses his knowledge like a rare infused vodka from Kachka in Portland. We enjoyed the beet infused frenet and Stas surprisingly also has a deep knowledge of liqueurs and alcoholic beverages that is not only fascinating but recounted in hilarious fashion because Stas is also a unique storyteller. Most of all, Stas just makes you feel at home. Highly recommend any Airbnb experiences that he is involved in.

Delicious food, warm company, and fascinating conversation! I learned so much about Russian culture, even though I have a Russian background as a first gen American. Stas is a master connector, deeply informed, and leads the experience with total ease and unforgettable flair! Will absolutely have to do this again with all of my friends!

If you’re interested in Russian food, culture, and language, this is an experience you won’t want to miss. If you just like great conversation, awesome food and learning about other cultures, GO! I had an amazing time dining with Stanislav. He was warm and friendly, and a fantastic conversationalist. His personal stories were fascinating and he had so much great wisdom and history to share. I have an unusual diet and he accommodated me well from the menu. Kachka’s food was as fresh as food can be and Stanislav filled in the details on the backgrounds and cultural importance of dishes. He taught me how to toast and how to sing a Russian folk song, and I had a blast. I also got to talk shop about language with him in depth, as I’m a Russian language student and he has a background in teaching English. I had the BEST time with him! I recommend this dinner highly to travelers looking to make a meaningful connection over a delicious meal, and leave energized with newfound knowledge and insight into another culture.

I loved learning the various ways to make a toast in Russian and singing the folk song together at the end was such a fun way to cap off the night! By the end, I felt full with good food, good vodka and good conversation. Definitely bring friends or be prepared to make new ones! Na zdrowie!

I loved this experience! From start to finish Stanislav was welcoming, engaging, and help nurture an environment of comradery with all the guests. He told stories and taught us fun and unique things about Russian culture especially - food culture. The food and atmosphere were totally inviting and having a guide made it all the better. If you can't go to Russia with Stanislav or you’ve been and want a host to share your stories with this is the perfect experience and Stanislav is the perfect host. I couldn't recommend it more highly!

What an AMAZING experience! First of all, I learned a TON about Russia and Russian culture. Stas talked about Russian life and culture in general and also shared very personal stories with us about his life and family in Russia. We all toasted and greeted his grandma on video in Russian (which he taught us!) We learned a number of Russian toasts and sang a Russian song. The food was delicious and very filling! We couldn't finish it all! The vodka infusions were delicious and we had just the right amount - not too little, not too much. I would recommend this experience to anyone who would like to learn about Russia in a way you never will watching the news. Stas is clear about presenting facts vs his opinions and is willing to share both. He really paints a picture for you of the life and culture there, so you really learn a lot! Also, he's clear to say that Russia is huge and different parts are different. An awesome aspect of this is that Stas has traveled to different parts of the country and can tell you about some of the similarities and differences in various regions. His knowledge is vast. Beyond that, Stas is a great person! I love him so much! He's fun and funny and so easy to talk to. I was one of three guests and we all talked to each other and got to know each other throughout the happy hour. Stas made everyone feel comfortable and as much info as he gave us, we still all shared stuff about ourselves. It really felt like hanging out with new friends, enjoying a happy hour. So, obviously, I can't recommend this event enough! Go, hang out with Stas, and learn to happy hour like a Russian!
