What you'll do
Come learn how to create beautiful Shibori designs. Dye natural fibers in the indigo vat to produce beautiful blues. Go home with your own unique Shibori Indigo designs. It is magic to watch the dye turn from a yellow green to indigo blue as it oxidizes!
We will begin looking at some sample fibers I have dyed. Using wood blocks, plexiglass shapes, found objects and rubber bands & clamps to constrain the dye, you will make various white and indigo patterns. Shibori and tie dye techniques will be used. Look through my binder where various techniques are explained. Have fun an experiment!
First dye a test piece cotton fabric to dye to see what works. Then choose 3 more pieces to dye. Choose from napkins, dish towels, tote bags or fabric. Additional items can be purchased for a small fee. Feel free to bring your own natural fibers to dye.
Wear clothes that you don't mind if some dye inadvertently splashes on, and shoes you won't mind getting wet. This is an outside activity, so dress appropriately in layers.
This class runs for two hours. If you wish to stay longer, to dye more items, the hourly fee is $45/hour; for a maximum of two additional hours.
Anything goes! Have fun!
Other things to note
Email me if you would like to meet at ANOTHER TIME or DATE for class, rather than those listed.
You will probably leave with damp fabrics in a plastic bag that will finish drying at home.

Welcome to Still Water Bindery.
After a trip to Japan over six years ago, I was enthralled with anything Indigo and the art of Shibori. I am still exploring the magic of Shibori Indigo Dyeing and will share my knowledge with you, so you can make some fabulous items to take home . . .

Where you'll be
We will use my old 1830's barn and the deck behind Still Water Bindery for this workshop. We will work in the red barn attached to the house, next to where you park for most of the time. The dye vat and materials to make your Shibori designs are located in the barn.
After your pieces are dyed and ready to dry, we will hang them on the clothes line on the bindery deck, a short walk from the barn across the lawn.

A+ Experience - 10/10! Our host Patty was everything we could ask for in this experience -- she was very knowledgeable, patient, helpful, flexible, open, easy going, friendly and warm. Everything we needed was provided. The sample work she had prepared was inspiring, and the setting was charming and beautiful. We drove 2 hours for this experience (each way!) and it was absolutely worth it. Can't wait to do it again - thank you, Patty!

From the minute I pulled into Patty’s driveway and saw samples of her beautiful shibori dyed fabric hanging on the porch, I was hooked. We happened to have one of the hottest days of summer in Vermont, but I was so enchanted by the indigo dyeing process, I forgot about the heat. Patty introduced us to the method of indigo dyeing that we would be using with the natural indigo dye. She gave us good book references for us to continue on our own at home. The technique of shibori indigo dyeing using knots, plastic shapes with clamps, flat wooden sticks, etc. magically translated into beautiful patterns when we removed our pieces from the dye. I particularly love the design I did on the white cotton tee shirt I brought with me. I am going to buy one or two of the books and try to do some shibori indigo dyeing on my own, BUT I am also looking forward to studying with Patty next time I am in Vermont. She is very well traveled, an excellent teacher, and highly respected and known for her craft. It was a pleasure studying with her.

What a fun and unique way to spend an afternoon! Patty was welcoming and her home and studio were comfortable and well equipped. I learned a bit about the dye itself and more about techniques. I’m glad I brought a dress from my closet to dye - I now have a one-of-a-kind creation! The only concern was that I wanted more time to play and create!
