What you'll do

After a short tour of the place, we make an opening ceremony to ask permission to the four divinities aldermen of the four cardinal points. This is done with copal smoke to cleanse each participant within the ritual. After the ceremony we enter the womb of Mother Earth (the Temazcal). There inside we provide aloe vera as natural soap for cleansing the pores of the body, in addition to a bouquet of aromatic herbs to relax, then we make exercises, guided meditation and Nahuatl songs related to the four sacred directions. After the Temazcal ceremony is completed people can rest in a designated area where they can relax deeply. To conclude the session, we enjoy a rich chicken broth or a vegetarian dish for those who do not eat meat, all accompanied by a sauce made in a traditional morter and drink a traditional 'pulque' (prehispanic fermented drink) of the region and tea for rehydration of the body.
Other things to note
We will spend two hours inside the Temazcal. The sweat-lodge helps treat various respiratory diseases and muscle aches, and is useful in the treatment of fertility problems.

Hello! My name is Xochitl Citlalmina, I am of Nahua origin and I am the keeper of a ‘temazcal’ (prehispanic sweat-lodge) in a rural area of Mexico City called Milpa ALta. I have spent many years of my life studying the temazcal, within the traditional Mexican medicine and I also hold a master's degree related to the topic. For 15 years I have ran Temazcal sessions especially of the ritual and therapeutic type. I believe that living this experience helps us to solve emotional problems that have a negative effect on our health. In this activity I am accompanied by a Nahuatl friend who has been with the Lakota, Ojibwe and Pueblo people of the USA, he also speaks English.

Where you'll be

The 'temazcal' or sweat-lodge named "Corazón del Monte" is a sacred place, surrounded by nature, near the hill named Teoca (Nahuatl name which means place of the gods), there we can get closer to that divinity.

This was a beautiful, magical spiritual experience. I don't think that this experience is meant for everyone and very much believe that those of us who showed up this day were meant to be there. I recommend this temazcal for those of who are spiritually inclined and would like to learn about the ancient healing traditions of the central Mexico. It will most likely take you you between 1.5 to 2 hours if you're coming down from Mexico City, which is deceiving because Google maps says it will only take you one hour. As you start driving up the mountain towns, there is no service, roads are super narrow and you can easily get lost. If you take an Uber or Taxi, I recommend going with someone who is really familiar with the area. I also recommend that you bring a towel, expect delays while driving, be flexible and open to the unknown! Gracias, Xochitl, por esta experiencia tan bella!

This was my first time going into a Temazcal and I absolutely loved it. It was a wonderful experience with wonderful people. Xochitl really makes you feel comfortable. She is very knowledgeable about the Mesoamerican culture and also speaks Nahuatl. The soup that we ate afterwards was delicious! And the hot sauce that she made from scratch was the best I have ever had. I will definitely be back!
