What you'll do
You start from the funky little village of Okato and make your way along the not so busy back road heading towards Mount Taranaki. You pass through some farmland and pockets of bush slowly making your way up towards the national park. A quick detour can take you to the Stony river. I can tell you where the best swimming holes are, they change from time to time. Afterwards you will find yourself cruising through the rain forest. Listen out for the native birds such as tui, kereru, bellbird and many more. If your really lucky you might hear the call of a Kiwi. With free entry, take a rest and walk around the beautiful Pukeiti gardens. Have a coffee or lunch at the Founders cafe. From here continue along the road until eventually you exit the rain forest and get an amazing view over New Plymouth, the Kaitake ranges and the Pouakai ranges. Head down hill from here through lush farmland to Oakura, the seaside resort of Taranaki. Buy an ice cream, swim in the sea or hire a surf board before continuing along the coastal walkway and explore the different beaches and fresh water swimming holes then back onto the highway for just a few kms from where you will make your way back to Okato where you can re-energize at one of the cafes.
