What you'll do

Greek cuisine has a culinary tradition of some 4000 years! Apart from being tasty, it has influenced not only the European cuisine but also many others.
On this Lonely Planet Food tour, we will start our day as the modern Greeks, enjoying a Greek coffee before we venture into Athens central market which has been operating for more than a hundred years, and you will enjoy one of Europe's most unique marketplaces and get the opportunity to talk to vendors and see all the fresh produce.
On our culinary journey, you will get the opportunity to taste the 'big five' of Greek cuisine, olives, olive oil, feta, herbs and honey in unique small family-owned businesses located around our historical center, the ancient Agora, the very same place where Ancient Greeks like Pericles, Aristotle and Platon used to stroll around.
We will share a "meze" platter (local tapas) enjoy unique cheeses, savory pies, Greek pastries and traditional dips in a deli favored by locals.
You will have the opportunity to taste our traditional spirits at a rooftop bar with views of Athen's most famous landmark the Acropolis and end our experience in the sweetest way by enjoying one of Greece's oldest sweets, Loukoumades.
Other things to note
Please inform us of any food allergies or special dietary requirements and we will be happy to accommodate you.

Nicolette was very passionate about sharing her stories and food with a group. Great balance of walking, looking through the markets and sitting and eating. Very good historical anecdotes on some Greek foods.

If anyone has very limited visiting time in Athens and not knowing much about Greek history and culture, this tour is worth considering.

Nikolletta served as our host for this experience. She was friendly and fun. Nikolletta was able to provide a deep understanding of the food, as well as some fun personal stories. It was a small group of 6 people on our tour and we all got to know each other well, as Nikolletta continually brought us to delicious food stops. These food places felt unique and authentic, as they were off the beaten path and filled with locals. By the end of the tour, we we're all stuffed with food and joy. This was a great start to exploring Athens and all it has to offer.
