What you'll do

I hope that you and your loved ones are all in good health and that you have all the support you need around you.

Originally from China, I have lived in the UK, Australia, Hong Kong and Paris, my home for the past 5.5 years. The daily lives of our families and friends all around the world have been disrupted for months now. My heart and thoughts go out to those who have also been affected by the Covid-19 during these challenging times.

The Survival French Lessons for Foodies experience will be running again in the near future, when our life is sort of “back to normal”.

If you’d like to find out more about my experiences, or if you need any advice for your upcoming trip to Paris, do drop me a line at sweetsecretsofparis@gmail.com or @sweetsecretsofparis on Instagram.

****

Travelling in France, any effort to speak French will be greatly appreciated - even if you don't have the perfect pronunciation or the correct conjugation. A simple "bonjour" or "merci" immediately brings you closer to the locals you are speaking to.

We will cover the basic greetings and useful expressions in French. We will also practice with native French speakers inside coffee shops and bakeries.

45 mins - informal language & culture sharing
45 mins - guided visit to the neighbourhood & practice!

You will feel more comfortable and confident with the language.

Private groups available.
Other things to note
This is a shared experience - it will always be a small group where you will feel comfortable with other travellers/foodies. If you wish to have a private 1:1 class customised to your level, please book a private group. Advanced classes or 5-session packages, different rates apply. PM for info.

I studied in England for 6 years before relocating to Australia, Hong Kong and Paris. I moved to Paris 5 years ago and mastered French in 3 months, passing DELF B2 language test, scoring 24 out of 25 in speaking.

Lover of words, I was a journalist for 7 years, before studying philosophy at university, working as a freelance interpreter at conferences/interviews and translated art books. I speak English, French, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Knowing how to speak a language doesn't necessarily mean knowing how to teach. As an expat for the past 15 years, I have developed my own methods to quickly master new foreign languages. I look forward to sharing my experience with you to help you master the essentials to make the most out of your stay.

Where you'll be

We will be meeting in a cute little Parisian coffee shop in the heart of the Left Bank. We will then walk around the historic neighbourhood (which is also one of the best in town for its gastronomic scene) and practice the phrases we have just learned with friendly local shop owners. Explore all the sweet spots in the neighbourhood and discover French pastry at its very best. Great opportunity to practice and purchase food, drinks and souvenirs.

This was a great tour with a knowledgeable person. The lessons were brief and informative and it was nice to get a a chance to practice before enjoying the rest of our trip to France.

This is a MUST DO! We took this intro lesson with Michelle on our first day, and it was an absolute life saver. Our first time in Paris, we were a little intimidated, but her guidance and quick lesson on some French basics was perfect. We walked around and practiced with her help, and also got a cheat cheat (which we used OFTEN). It was a perfect start to our wonderful vacation. I am convinced that without this experience our vacation would not have been so great. Michelle even was a source of help later in our trip when we needed to find a specific store. Shes a wonderful person.

We met up with a group at a cafe. It ended up being more crowded than we expected so it was kind of noisy and I had a hard time hearing Michelle. I have to hear very clear and louder to help my brain click with new language. But she was very kind and enthusiastic. We appreciated her stories and explanations. Her reasons why things are said a certain way really helped. We explored a few neat shops and that was nice. The experience says 1.5 hours but it was 2.5 so I was freezing and hungry by the end but that wasn’t her fault . We did learn some French and I’m very grateful for the pdf she sent us after to review. We are looking forward to learning more French as we plan to move to Paris in July 2021. Michele also gave us yummy foodie recommendations which was awesome.

Michelle was great to talk with, listened to my questions and gave good tips! I was armed with the basic phrases and she gave insights about slang and customs as well, which I really appreciated. I definitely recommend learning from Michelle on the first day of your trip in Paris...you'll definitely need it, as the French language is very difficult! Michelle will also be taking you around a few dessert shops and the supermarket to show you different food names. What a fun way to learn!

I had a great time with Michelle and certainly added to my french language repertoire - and left feeling a lot more confident in just getting amongst it and trying to speak in public as much as possible. Thanks Michelle - I would definitely recommend!
