What you'll do

Denver has a historically important and "underground" Japanese American (JA) community that most people don't know about, and you can experience it on this tour by hearing about key historical figures that helped shape it, learning the teachings of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and sampling delicious Japanese foods and sweets at a second generation Japanese market.

We will start at the Garden Plaza where the statues of Governor Ralph L. Carr, Minoru Yasui and Reverend Yoshitaka Tamai stand. During the time of internment of about 120,000 Japanese Americans (JAs) in the U.S, Governor Karr and Reverend Tamai made courageous efforts to welcome displaced JAs to Colorado. One internee, Minoru Yasui, arrived in Colorado in 1944 where he also fought laws that directly targeted JAs after the war.

Nearby is the Denver Tri-State Buddhist Temple, an "oasis of calm, acceptance, reflection and gratitude," which has anchored the regional spirit of the JA community for over 100 years. Unfortunately due to COVID, the Temple is closed to visitors and members, however we will briefly discuss how its members view the world from a Jodo Shinshu Buddism perspective.

To conclude our tour, we will indulge our taste buds at Pacific Mercantile which is celebrating its 75th birthday this year.

Konnichiwa!

At eleven-years-old my family moved to Japan where I instantly fell in love with the people and culture. After 15+ years of experience, my love of travel, guiding and connecting has continued to deepen every day. Now, I run ZI, and experiential travel company with a mission to reinvent the way the world travels through responsible travel practices and trips.

Upon moving to Denver I became captivated with the fact that the city has played a significant role in Japanese-American history in the U.S.

Sakura Square, a hidden mecca in the heart of downtown, preserves this rich heritage, culture and community. What's bothering, though, is that no one, even locals, knows much about it!

My goal is to help open doors to the experiences that connect you to one of Denver's richest, yet least know, hyperlocal communities.
