Dyeing with Nature

Brooklyn, United States

Experience hosted by Karin

2 hours
Includes equipment
Up to 6 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

Forage for your dye from nature, grow some in your garden, or grab from your kitchen!

In this class we'll discuss why we need to properly prep our fabrics, use natural materials to get lasting colors, and how to use modifiers to change shades or fix your work. Even some shibori and bundle dyeing.

Each student will get to dye 3 items, to learn how to bundle dye, stove top, and vat dye.

Leave knowing how to start your own dye journal, store your dye baths to get the most out of your foraged materials, and where to source materials from earth conscious companies.

All materials will be provided, but students welcome to bring smaller all natural articles that are prewashed in pH balanced soap. (More info with sign up)

(In this class we do not have the time prep or mordant yourselves. If interested in the full experience, you must sign up for 4 session "World of Natural Dyes.")
Other things to note
It's always fun to bring in stuff that you have lying around. Cleaned, white or lightly colored natural fibers (such as cotton, silk, or wool) work best.

Hi there, I'm Karin, a hands on textile designer and maker! Myself and my little dog Kyle work in my building in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It's a creative and artistic neighborhood with lots a good places to eat close by (Roberta's Pizza, Shinobi Ramen) and Sey coffee roasters next door. The place is called Better Than Jam's Store & Studio and has been running since 2010. The storefront hosts many locally made products and behind the store, sits the extensive studio. There I teach workshops, create my own line named "Better Than Jam," but also host other artists, makers, and craftspeople.

Karin hosts an amazing natural dyeing experience. She was incredibly organized. We were able to practice a diverse number of processes and achieve spectacular results in a very short time frame. Asan artist who has done textile dyeing in my training, I was amazed at how much we could accomplish in such a short time. This was because Karin was organized, had all our materials ready, was able to per-prepare the samples, saving time, provided a detailed written handout, and finally kept the class moving in a respectful manner. Thank you Karin!!

What an inspiring and fun introduction to natural dyeing! I left with enough information and ideas to try this again at home, and will soon. Karin was a thoughtful and organized instructor. Thank you!

What fun, dyeing textiles with diverse botanicals. And there were only five of us, so we received lots of 1-on-1 Q&A attention. Each of us left with three completed pieces. Highly recommended.
