Study Korean and cook in the market

Seoul, South Korea

Experience hosted by Minseon

3 hours
Includes food, drinks, tickets

What you'll do

During this experience, you will try a lot of delicious Korean foods and explore some of the local area. You'll also be able to study and understand a bit of Korean. It's an easy language to learn and I will introduce and share special stories. I will teach you quick and practical Korean and you'll be able to read hangul—the Korean alphabet—which will help make your travel easier. I'll also prepare some tools and educational materials. After our short lecture, we'll explore the Jungbu Market and you'll practice buying ingredients using your newly learned Korean expressions. The market is a large dried seafood market and you'll see many food ingredients. When we're finished shopping, we will cook together at my secret space—an open kitchen in the market. I will choose the menu depending on the date, but one fixed menu item will be dalgona or ppopgi—a Korean candy made with melted sugar and baking soda. It used to be a popular street snack in the 1970s and 1980s, and it's still eaten today as a retro food. It is also a lot of fun to make. So why don't we explore this interesting market together?

I am a chef and owner of OME cooking lab, a company that creates cooking programs. During graduate school, I majored in traditional dietary lifestyle food. I was a member of the Korean Education Club at my university and I've had many experiences teaching Korean. After traveling to over 20 countries and attending many cooking classes, I decided to open a home-style cooking class with my big love for food. For this particular experience, I have also opened a kitchen in the market. With a warm heart, I would like to share Korean food and food culture with visitors.

Where you'll be

Jungbu Market is a big dried seafood market in Seoul. It was built in 1957 and it has a more-than-60-year history. Here, you'll be able to see many interesting ingredients and get to know the seafood culture. I will have an open table in the middle of this market and we will study and cook there in this secret place.

Jihee and Yuri are knowledgeable and immersed in the community. Booked this experience to surprise a friend, we had the BEST time! Learned basic korean to use at the market, left us feeling confident to go back and conquer it on own own. Amazing not to miss market, and having a local orient you to its sprawl is priceless! Jihee is a master chef and we really felt we learned techniques to enhance our skills in the kitchen. I would do it again !

It was an amazing experience at the fish market! Guys were really nice and friendly, I would say it’s a real edutainment experience - we got to learn both Korean language and cooking. Everything was very well thought through and we even got lots of souvenirs back home, as well as plenty of wonderful emotions from talking and interaction with true Korean people. Highly recommended 🙌🏻

Cooking in the market with Minseon-San and Dave was wonderful! She created such a relaxed environment and the other stallholders came and watched. We also got to cook and taste delicious food. Not to be missed!

I had great time!! The market was huge and I discovered a variety of dried seafood !! The Korean class was very informative and enabled me to understand the Korean culture, and some basic expressions. The kitchen was outdoors. It was really cool! Even if it was a bit cold, they prepared some warm dishes for us, so we did not suffer from the cold. It was a really nice experience in Seoul. I highly recommend it to start your trip in Korea!!
