What you'll do

I want to take you on one of my favourite treks near Cusco. This one takes about four to five hours but including the transport it will take up the better part of the day.

We begin by taking transport to a famous ruin about 45 minutes from Cusco. From there we trek downhill, skirting around a mountainside, then zig-zagging down and down into a deep, lush valley. We stop at a cascading waterfall before dropping down further into a forest, following a stream and then crossing it over my own little bridge––yes, I had the bridge made for this purpose––until we arrive at a small village in the Sacred Valley; from there, we take public transport back to Cusco.

* My English only covers basics. I guide in Spanish and do my best in English. If you are wanting to practice Spanish or Quechua, this is an excellent opportunity.
** If you are staying in Urubamba, that is also fine.
Other things to note
Be averagely fit for this all-downhill walk. If you have bad knees or weak ankles, though, this walk is not for you given a section of slightly steep, loose, uneven and slippery-when-wet terrain.

Hi, I'm Fortunata. I am a friendly, happy and chirpy Peruvian woman. I come from a remote, Andean rural village. I speak Spanish, Quechua, Italian and basic English. I have been working in tourism for ten years and I have been guiding treks for two years. As a local guide, I know the mountain treks around Cusco inside out. I want to take you on beautiful secret walks which are off the beaten track and rarely visited by other tourists.

Where you'll be

This is one of my favourite walks that only local people know about; you rarely see another tourist on this trek. The walk takes us first through stunning mountain scenery, then into a beautiful valley. The highlight is a waterfall, but in fact the whole walk is lovely.

We appreciated the culturally rich, non-touristy feel of the hike. The views are truly breathtaking and peaceful. Fortu does better with English than she gives herself credit. Our son was able to lightly assist with translation at times. It made it easier, but not entirely necessary. Fortu does a great job of answering historical and botanical questions, without “over-touring”. She provided a wonderful snack and lunch for us. There are a few challenging areas of the hike, but after Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain, it was primarily relaxing. I had knee surgery 8 weeks earlier and although I was quiet mobile, she was patient with my pace. Personally, I had to push through the last hour (of a 4 he hike), but the other able bodies were just fine. Great value! Highly recommend this hike!

Fortu put a great hike together through the mountains and of course along the waterfall. She knows a lot about her area and I had a great time!

I highly recommend this hike! Fortunata was a great guide and knows enough English to answer any questions. We started in a village about 45 minutes away from Cuzco. Just after entering the trail, there were Incan ruins, and then a bit later and magnificent waterfall! Ultimately, we descended down a mountain into a gorgeous valley and walked alongside a river a few hours to another village. Absolutely stunning scenery!
