What you'll do
We'll meet outside Guga S'thebe, a cultural centre run by the City of Cape Town in Langa township.
We will show you around the centre and introduce you to other members of the local craft scene.
Then you'll spend time together working with traditional South African beading techniques, and you'll make your very own choice of beaded accessory using traditional glass beads and up-cycled buttons.
Other things to note
In some South Africans' minds, the townships are still imagined to be dangerous places, but this is not true! A big part of the vision for Our Workshop is in fact to allow this fallacy to be overcome.

Nontuthuzelo Mhloma, Khanyisiwe Plaatjies, Ivy Nhlapo and Noluthando Charles are members of Our Workshop. They all learned beading from women in their communities. Our extremely friendly hosts will no doubt entertain and amuse you while you get a chance to really engage with local experts for 2 hours, and make a beautiful bracelet, necklace and/or earrings (depending how fast you work!!).

I had a great time with Nontuthuzelo she gave me a personal, informative experience. It’s easy while traveling to just consume and hang out with fellow travelers. I was grateful for the chance to make something and to learn a new skill with someone who is passionate about her work. This is a wonderful community space, definitely worth a visit.

I went to this wonderful place without many expectations but had such a great afternoon together with the people in the cultural centre making earrings, bracelets and necklaces. They were welcoming and interesting and although the communication of my booking had slipped, there was no finger to put on it in the end :-) THANK YOU!

This is a must-do experience! I had such a wonderful time with Ivy doing beading. It was so special to learn about the cultural center, the artists, and personal insights from Ivy. The process of crafting in the space was quite fun and unique. I even left with a few pieces of jewelry to remember the experience and my time in Cape Town!

My family and I wanted to go on an experience in Cape Town that would give us some insight into how most South Africans live and see and experience for ourselves a township. My children are 10 and 12 years old. This was FANTASTIC. We had an opportunity to meet and connect with many local people and the beading was just a highlight. The organization is amazing, and there are some very talented young artists emerging. The art we saw was moving- and to meet the artists, and hear their inspiration was quite special. I highly recommend this experience for anyone wanting to visit a township and also for anyone and everyone who is interested in art. I feel so grateful for this opportunity not only for myself, but for my children as well.
