What you'll do

"Experience KENDO" offers authentic BUSHIDO ("WAY OF SAMURAI") learning experience through the lecture and basic motions of the traditional martial arts, KENDO ("WAY OF SWORD"). Tomoyoshi, the instructor, will give you a short lecture on how ancient swordsmanship of SAMURAI later developed into KENDO. He will share the heroic stories of ancient SAMURAIS including his own great-grandfather, Yoshishige Hayashi. He will also share the controversial influence of BUSHIDO values to this nation and his family into extremism especially in the period of WW2. He will end his story on how redemption came and led him to the current inner peace and to the life of a pacifist.

After the lecture, you will wear all the KENDO armors and will learn the basic KENDO movements. At the end, you will get to do the KENDO match to each other. Upon successfully completing the workshop, you will receive a beautifully designed “Certificate of Experience”. Tomoyoshi will teach you everything in English. Q&A is always welcomed. Photo taking is freely allowed. His wife, Tomoko, who also has a rich Kendo experience will assist ladies and children in any necessary way. It is a very safe activity but exciting enough to meet your adventurous expectation. We are confident that this is one of the best workshops you can find in this kind!
Other things to note
Please make sure to arrive at the venue 30 MINUTES before the workshop starting time. The Dojo is considered as the most sacred martial arts center in Japan, so please act with respectful manner.

Welcome to "Experience Kendo in KYOTO” booking page!
My name is Tomoyoshi Yamanaka. I am your instructor in this workshop and very much looking forward to meeting you all! I grew up with a rich heritage of BUSHIDO tradition and KENDO practice. I am the fourth generation descendant of the last Samurai, Yoshishige Hayashi, who served the Hikone clan in today's Shiga prefecture about 150 years ago. It is my honor to introduce to you this part of Japanese culture. I trust your experience will be one of the most exciting, inspiring, and memorable ones during your time in Japan!

Where you'll be

The main venue will be Kyoto's own "Butokuden" in Kyoto Budo Center. It is the hall of fame and oldest Kendo Dojo existing in today’s world. It was built in 1899 and miraculously survived the WW2 devastation. In 1996, Japanese government officially recognized it as a nation's important cultural asset. Please be notified that in case the Dojo is occupied by other groups, we will be using the sub-Dojo within the same property of Kyoto Budo Center.

This is an absolute must for anyone traveling to Kyoto. Tomoyoshi is a masterful instructor and teacher. The swordsmanship techniques were taught with the highest care and patience, while the in-depth history lecture was told with great passion. The location itself makes for a humbling experience and I left with a newfound appreciation for Japanese culture and history. I've only been in Kyoto for about a day, but I can say with utmost certainty that this will be the highlight of my entire journey.

Such an amazing experience especially since it was also held at the oldest active dojo in Japan! We not only learned about Kendo but also its history and its ties with the history of Japan. We get to appreciate the art of the sport more. We were lucky enough to have a more personal session as there were no other participants. I bet this experience is always fully booked during regular times and I understand why! It was not just educational but so much fun as well. We were looking forward to this for a long time and it did not disappoint!

An informational and exciting experience that screams traditional Kyoto culture. It would be a tragedy to come to Kyoto and not experience Bushido with Tomoyoshi. The dojo was breath taking and had so much history! Even in times of COVID, I felt very safe in my small group. Enjoy Kyoto!

If you are on the fence about this experience.. 100% DO NOT BE! BOOK IT! BOOK IT! BOOK IT! Words aren’t enough to describe how much we enjoyed this Kendo workshop with Tomoyoshi. From storytelling to a personalized beginner lesson in the art of Kendo this experience has you covered. Tomoyoshi is able to cater to all types of learners and will make you feel extremely comfortable. His wife was also extremely friendly and helped us take pictures and added her own personal insight about the topic of Kendo. The location was absolutely stunning and I felt honored to be in the oldest Dojo in Japan. In case you made it this far in my review and you’re still on the fence.. BOOK IT!

Amazing experience with wonderful hosts. This was a memorable and historically rich experience. The building is the oldest dojo in Japan and Tomoyoshi explains its complex history. His wife is really awesome and also knows Kendo. She assisted me with protective gear. I learned the basic moves of Kendo, from footwork to swings to ki-building yells. The uniform is partially dyed with indigo which brings in other Japanese traditions. I really admire the anti-racism work Tomoyoshi is doing in Japan. He’s an excellent storyteller and is globally minded. After the class, he and his wife directed me to a Kyudo dojo (a separate facility) where the class graciously let me watch them shoot arrows. Wonderful immersion into Japanese culture!
