What you'll do

Get ready to experience the rich history and culture of Beyonce's childhood home while chatting with local residents and supporting small businesses. We will start our walking tour at a Emancipation Park, which has plenty of free parking and public restrooms. Emancipation Park is at the heart of Third Ward, a dynamic neighborhood undergoing revitalization as it strives to preserve its culture.

Next, we'll visit local small businesses near the park, including a creative bakery with hip-hop themed cookies and cupcakes, including vegan options and the baker's own unique invention: the "stuffed cup," a cupcake with a soft cookie baked inside; Houston's first and only member-owned co-op grocery store; and a funky bohemian cafe with vegetarian Indian-fusion cuisine.

Guests will then explore a giant street mural and learn the fascinating history and future plans for our penultimate stop, the historic Houston Negro Hospital, the first hospital for African-American patients and medical trainees in Houston. The tour can be customized based on guests' interests. We'll end back at Emancipation Park or, if the guest prefers, a local neighborhood eatery with gourmet french fries.
Other things to note
The tour will involve about 1.5 miles of walking, rain or shine, so please bring comfortable shoes and appropriate clothes.

I have been a community organizer and public health advocate for almost two decades. In addition to having a master's degree in public health, I am a graduate of the University of Houston's Stimulating Urban Renewal through Entrepreneurship (SURE) program, for which I received a Congressional Award from Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. I am also an active member of multiple civic groups in Third Ward as well as the Rotary Club of Houston Skyline, through which I have been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. I am also an Airbnb Superhost and disaster response host.

I thoroughly enjoyed Ed's walking tour. He was very knowledgeable and engaging in the telling of the neighborhood's history. Learning about that area's history was wonderful, but what I most appreciated was Ed's introductions to locals who serve the community. Meeting locals and getting to know their story made the tour very memorable.

A part of Houston we would never have experienced without finding this tour. An up close look at what CAN be done to help improve the inner city without demolishing it and displacing it’s residents. A great perspective.

A must do if you are in Houston. Ed is very passionate about the Third ward. His passion is obvious from the moment you meet . I got to attend a council meeting where the Third Ward was awarded aspecial status that will attract funding and attention to help preserve the historical aspects of the neighbourhood. I would never have seen any of this on my own. Highly Highly recommend this tour with ED. Such an interesting and informative guy.
