What you'll do

PLEASE MESSAGE me for available date/times. I prefer to go Fridays or Wednesdays and mornings are better in warmer months to avoid the afternoon heat and rain, but I am flexible and can likely accommodate your specific time and date preference. Please just ask.

We'll meet at the Hontoon island state park ferry parking lot on River Ridge Road. Before we depart we'll talk about what's involved in the trip and what you want to focus on as well as kayaking safety and courtesy basics. We'll then launch the kayaks (your feet will get wet) and paddle upstream to Blue Spring where we can stretch our legs possibly swim. Only the first little bit of the river has houses on the banks and even there they are just on one side. The rest is completely natural. The wildlife viewing and scenery are spectacular.

The return trip is easier going with the current. If we have made good paddling time we'll be able to explore a few of the smaller creeks, lake beresford, or hontoon island state park.

This trip is 7-9 miles of paddling and is dependent on wind or weather conditions.
Other things to note
It takes balance and flexibility to board and paddle a kayak. If you have trouble with your knees, back, stamina, or balance please inquire for details. Weight restrictions will apply. The trip is a bit strenuous so please ask ahead of time if you're concerned about your fitness or skill level.

I have kayaked and boated Central Florida for years. I enjoy fishing as well as exploring nature. Being an outdoor enthusiast, there aren't many species I can't identify or areas I haven't explored. I love sharing our unique aquatic environment. I kayak for exploration, fishing, and exercise.

Where you'll be

We'll start at Hontoon Island state park which is a 1600 acre park and preserve. We'll paddle about half way around the perimeter of the island to Blue Spring state park, which is the largest spring on the river and an important manatee refuge. The whole trip is on the St Johns River which is the largest in Florida and one of the few rivers that flows south to north. We'll also skirt along the edge of Lake Beresford along the way.

It was a very pleasant tour with Chris. Good mixture of activity and learning about Florida wildlife. He knows the area since long time and shared a lot of interesting facts. On the tour we saw manatees and large fish in the spring area, alligators along the river, turtles, and many different birds. Chris was flexible with respect to the route and time, considering the skill level. A perfect experience for friends of the nature.
