What you'll do

We've updated this experience to ensure social distancing can take place, limited group sizes down to 2 from the same household and moved some of the activity outdoors.

Step inside a 15th century Cotswold thatched cottage to learn to bake English scones. See how the owners of the cottage have lovely restored the old farm labourer’s home and hear stories of the cottage’s ancestry. Whist enjoying making the scones using vintage cooking utensils in the cottage kitchen, there is also chance to sample some local English wine, while waiting for the scones to bake in the oven.

While the scones are cooling, enjoy a short guided walking tour around the Cotswold ironstone village of Hanwell, visiting a 13th century church and a castle where King James l and Oliver Cromwell both stayed, followed by your cream tea picnic with homemade jam and clotted cream in the Oxfordshire countryside.
Other things to note
Come hungry for history, heritage and of course scones with lashing of homemade jam and clotted cream! Yum!

I'm your perfect guide having led short walks and tours of the Cotswolds to visitors for around 4 years. We have been lovingly restoring our 15th century thatch cottage using traditional methods and researching who's lived in the cottage going back to 1841. I'm a keen baker, baking bread and recreating the local recipes in our cottage kitchen - which will be warming and welcoming to everyone who comes and visits.

What a beautiful cottage in the countryside! Chris made my partner's birthday very special. The scones tasted wonderful, and were fun to bake. Chris was extremely knowledgeable of the local area, his restoration project was eye-opening and of course the history too. I would highly recommend anyone to book this experience.

We had a fantastic experience with Chris. Their cottage is worth a visit by itself .... wonderfully and lovingly restored. The tour of the village was informative and interesting. And last but not least scone making for beginners was so much fun. Highly recommended

This experience was truly wonderful. Chris is a superb host: warm and welcoming, and very knowledgeable about the history of his beautiful home, the village of Hanwell and the Cotswolds as a whole. From the English tea served by the cozy fire when I arrived, to the scone-making, and the walk around this historic village, this experience was well-curated from beginning to end. Our freshly baked scones turned about great, and we lathered them with clotted cream and jam and enjoyed more tea. So good!! I highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in classic baking or anyone who enjoys English history or anyone with an eye towards architecture and historical home restorations. Also anyone who wants to share a lovely afternoon drinking tea and making/eating delicious scones.

Chris is a great host ! I read the reviews before signing up but it exceeded my expectations ! Chris picked me up from The station and also took me back so I could catch the train to bourton on the water. The cottage is beautiful and cozy, the experience was great and I took the rest of the scones with me. Chris gave me a tour of the village and we stopped at a different village on the way back to the station. We had great conversations which made the experience even better. I can’t recommend this enough ; the scones were amazing and so were the host and location! I will come back and take part of the other experiences Chris offers. Thank you for making me feel so welcomed!
