What you'll do

We will begin our experience at the base of Mt. Haguro at the Zuishimon Gate.

This mountain has been the site of worship for the Yamabushi Mountain Monks ever since this mountain was first opened in the late 6th Century A.D. In the ancient mountain worship religion of Shugendo, Mt. Haguro represents the world of early desires and a place to separate yourself from the real world and discover inner peace.

We will then begin our hike on the winding stone trail through the towering cedar forests and climb the 2,445 steps up the mountain. Along the way we will stop at historical landmarks including the Zuishimon Gate, Five Story Pagoda, and Sanjin Gosaiden Temple at the top of the mountain.

Along the way, I would love to tell you about the rich history of this mountain and the Journey of Rebirth on the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa.

Arriving at the top, we will tour the sprawling complex of the Sanjin Gosaiden Shrine.
We will then have lunch in a temple restaurant in the middle of the forest where we will enjoy Shojin Ryori, the traditional cuisine of the Yamabushi.

We will then return down the mountain and I would be happy to guide you to your place of lodging. (I would also be happy to help you find and book a place.)

I am the co-founder of The Hidden Japan, a promotional company here in Yamagata that is dedicated to putting the countryside charm of the Tohoku Region on the map for international tourists visiting Japan.

I have lived in Tokyo but was ultimately drawn to Northern Japan for the pristine nature, warmhearted communities, and truly genuine people here who have helped me make a life here in Sakata City.

This tour may be co-led with another local host named Yuka Kato.

Where you'll be

We will explore the sacred cedar forest of Mt. Haguro. This location is a truly undiscovered gem of Japan that illustrates the beautiful harmony of the Japanese people and their love and respect for the sacred nature of this country.

It is very rare to see foreign travelers in this region and we will have most of this mountain to ourselves.

It was a splendid trip! Tsuruoka, the place itself is wonderful, and Derek made it a better trip. Before I went to Tsuruoka, when I was preparing my trip, he helped me renting a car in Tsuruoka, which is hard for a foreigner who hardly speak Japanese on their own. Tsuruoka is very small town, it’s hard to get around without a car. Thank you, Derek! We met 10am at the Tsuruoka station, and went to Haguro mountain together. Derek explained not only the history of Haguro mountain, but also the other mountains in Yamagata, since they are related. Haguro is so beautiful and I can feel the spiritual energy of the mountain while climbing it. The 500-year-old row of trees is really beautiful. Highly recommended! After climbing he took me to the restaurant, which has old tradition. Their Soba was amazing! Derek gave me a lot of information. A place to eat dinner and a place to buy Sake. Yamagata is very famous for Sake. Thank you for helping me make a wonderful trip in Tsuruoka, Derek!
