Ihwa Mural Village with a Seoul Insider

Jongno-gu, South Korea

Experience hosted by Hallie

What you'll do

We'll meet a subway station in the heart of Seoul and head from the bustling city streets into the nearby daldongnae, or mountainside village. We walk through the theater district, up a path to a park and into the Ihwa Mural Village to see murals that have been added to the area in an effort to revitalize the area.

We'll stop at a cafe for coffee and a snack to discuss the history of the area and why the "Art in City Project" to revitalize the area may have had unintended consequences. Finding the village can be a bit difficult and knowing exactly where to go can be confusing, but not when you're with me.

The tour will continue up to where the village meets the Seoul Fortress Wall and we'll walk along the wall for just a bit to get a great view of Seoul from above that most people visiting the mural village completely miss and then head back to the mural village to continue seeing the murals before heading back down to the nearest subway station.

Through this tour you will be able to learn about Seoul post-Korean War and see how the area was affected and grown. You'll see art and learn about how the locals feel about it. This is a visit into a part of Seoul that many visitors don't have, but should. It's not just a mural village, it's more than that.
Other things to note
This is a walk that goes uphill and downhill. While food isn't provided on the tour, I'll drop visitors at nearby restaurants or the subway should they want to find food.

I founded the site The Soul of Seoul in 2012 to share the sights and sounds of Seoul that most foreigners were missing out on. I have been featured on CNN, the BBC and Samantha Brown's "Places To Love" among other acclaimed outlets because I know the spots that you want to visit. I write for Forbes Travel Guide and the Korea Times. Through my tours, I share personal experiences and insight into Korean culture via the perspective of an American that has lived in Korea for more than a decade. I hope to encourage and give my visitors the confidence to explore. I promote local businesses and community through my tours and hope more travelers will come to love Seoul as much as I do.

Where you'll be

Most of the tour is outdoors and includes stops along the route in parks or alleys but there will also be a stop in Milk Gongbang, a cafe that is the idea of two Masterchef Korea chefs. The cafe is popular for their delectable ice creams which you can pour your espresso over. Other than this indoor stop, the rest of the tour will be outside so wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

If you’re looking for a unique Seoul experience - this is the way to go. The murals themselves tell different stories and reflect the challenges that the neighborhood face. Hallie is very knowledgeable of the area, the history of the murals and the locals as well. She is an excellent host - caring, sweet and enlightened!

Hallie was a wonderful host. She has amazing knowledge of the area we went to, Ihwa Mural Village, and also her own experiences with the area, people, and culture of Korea. I’ve done other experiences on AirBnb before, and it was nice to have someone sharing her own twist on things. I am also very grateful for her when we first arrived, 30minutes late because we got lost and arrived across town. She was very understanding and patient with us. She was very clear with directions and storytelling. I would definitely recommend Hallie to others, and if I had more time, I would want to try other tours with her!

Hallie showed us around a hidden Gem. This experience is great if you are into art and a little of South Korean history. A couple of steep hills but for most part a nice walk. Hallie was very easy to talk to and knew the great spots to go to. I think that this a great experience for anyone.

Had a wonderful walk and talk with Hallie, she was kind and passionate (and was understanding of me being late!). I was lucky to just be one on one so got to have some really cool and interesting conversations and get some great pics. Hallie has a great background knowledge of the village and other areas as well. Would definitely have got lost alone! 10/10 would recommend to everyone!

For people who are passionate about street art and history, this would be a great tour as it visits an area thats off the beaten track and very local. Hallie was very friendly and shares both tour related and personal information on Korea, street art and her journey to this country. Was fortunate to be the only one on the tour as maybe its a weekday so was able to ask questions and discuss matters relating to issues in Korea and overseas. Highly recommended !!!

Thanks to Hallie for this experience! Without her I would have missed all the nice murals I've been able to see!
