What you'll do

As a member of a small group, you will get a behind the scenes look at one of the nation's top farmers markets. During the tour, we will discuss the benefits, and challenges, of a growers-only market, the impact of regulations and perceptions on the success of a local food system, the function of food access programs, and learn buying tips and how to navigate a new market.
10:00- Meet under the banner at the information booth (orange tent) in the center of the market. We'll grab a cup of coffee, or kombucha if you prefer, and prepare to start.
10:05- You'll learn how I came to be the director of BCFM and why I love it. We'll also have the opportunity to learn about you and your interests in markets and local food systems. 10:20- Off we go to see the 37 vendors at the market, discussing various farming systems and how they impact you as well as investigating the market's role in the local food system and role in Denver's food scene.
11:00- Event ends. You are invited to continue your exploration of the market, do some shopping, and grab a bite to eat with your new friends. Or... We can also put you to work sorting recycle and compost!
Other things to note
Remember, we are rain or shine. Come as casual as you like but dress for the weather. The best way to fully enjoy your experience is to be comfortable.

Hi, I'm thrilled to be your guide through our local farms. I'm the Executive Director of Boulder County Farmers Markets, rated the #1 market in the nation in 2015 by USA Today. I'm aTEDx speaker, was named the 2015 Colorado CEO of the Year by ColoradoBiz Magazine, and am an advocate for the value of local farming both locally and nationally. I serve as the Vice President of the board of the Farmers Market Coalition and on the executive committee for SOIL, a program of the Slow Money Institute. My greatest achievement is that my kids eat copious amounts of fresh vegetables and love it.

Where you'll be

We will be at the open air market at Union Station, Denver's only growers-only market. I'll share the backstory of the market, its founding and future, and insight into what it takes to operate a market. You'll have special access to the "where the rubber meets the road" for local farming. We will also spend some time at the "back" of the market learning about the logistics and challenges vendors tackle.
