Classes are hands-on, participatory and a whole lot of fun! As a class we prepare 4 courses, taking advantage of passive and active cooking time so that the full meal will be ready at once.

At First Class Cooking, we want to make everyone a better home chef. Our culinary approach teaches
• Proper Culinary Technique
• explains Kitchen Science in relatable & memorable terms
• discusses principles of Flavor Composition
so that one can successfully cook, without a recipe.

Recipes are developed to deliver sophisticated flavors in elevated preparations yet still be approachable, so that novice chefs will not feel overwhelmed. I begin by demonstrating techniques and then pass the knives and tools off to the students to experience themselves.
Other things to note
Many menus can be adjusted to accommodate dietary concerns; Please inquire when booking to discuss if/how the menu can work for you.

I started First Class Cooking with a mission to make everyone a better home chef. I started cooking in grade school and my curiosity and adoration for produce led me to work on farms, in kitchens and in catering operation across the US and abroad.

My approach distills proper culinary technique, explains kitchen science in relatable, memorable terms, and discusses principles of flavor composition so that one can successfully cook, without a recipe.

The class atmosphere is fun, encouraging and social and the recipes are flexible to dietary concerns as well as ingredient you'll find back home

Where you'll be

Classes are held out of a spacious and remodeled live/work loft in San Francisco. The kitchen has been expanded to accommodate many people working with it, while the scale of equipment remains familiar to a residential kitchen.
While we will mostly be working on our feet, there is seating adjacent to the kitchen if you seek a break.
The culinary studio is ADA compliant.

I learned so much with Emily during our lesson! I now know how to properly chop onions and mince garlic- I can’t wait to show off this new level of professionalism when cooking for my own family. The meal was delicious and filling. We learned how to bring out or tone down certain flavors and she told us about where to find the freshest ingredients for certain dishes. Emily herself was really easy to chat with and it turns out we have a lot in common!

Emily is an amazing chef and host. She teaches things very clearly and never babies the guests. We all got equal time to work with the equipment and food. My favorite part was how Emily explained the science and reason behind the cooking techniques and ingredients. The class was fun and relaxing. Her home is peaceful and her dog Buffy is as sweet as they come. I’d recommend this class to anyone who loves cooking or wants to love cooking!
