What you'll do

After the pandemic, Budapest is waking up slowly. No rush, no crowd in the moment. The few travellers can enjoy the atmosphere of a real city with all the precaution we have to comply with. Our tour starts in a retro café of the Hungarian 60's. A typical coffee (called 'simpla') will lead us back to that time. After an introduction about Hungary's recent history until the fall of the 'soft dictatorship', we hit the road to the main attraction of the day, a Memorial park full of epic statues of the former regime: Lenin, Stalin, Marx, Hungarian communist leaders. Selfies and photos included:) On the way, you will hear more info and private stories about this historic period. Passing by important sites, I'll show you where the removed statues were before and will also demonstrate the naming history in the city. With me, you can enter a house that used to serve as meeting point of agents and informers. In the park, you'll get to know funny or sad stories about what role these statues and monuments used to play in people's everyday life. In the nearby exhibition hall, you have also the opportunity to get a deeper understanding of the communist era. You can also look into the 'Life of an Agent', educational film of the Secret Police. Back to the city, you can finish the tour in a special pub full of ironic accessories relating to communism and have lunch there (optional).
Other things to note
Dates and number of the group are flexible. Please let me know if you want to attend the tour in another day or time than offered, or if your group consists of more than 4 people.

My name is Zoltan, I was born and have been living in Budapest since then. I have a university degree in history which not only shows my affinity towards historic sciences but gave me a clean and critical approach to social issues. I spent here many years during the so-called 'Communist' period, too, so I have personal experiences and many insider information about the everyday life of our recent past. I also travelled a lot in other communist countries, then I could see the difference between them and us and I can tell long stories about it as well.

Where you'll be

Our first place to enter is probably the only one café in Budapest that keeps the original intact design of the 60's.
The Memorial park's brick walls, the iron gate and the nearby barracks will bitterly picture the atmosphere of the world behind the iron curtain.
The last (and optional) site, the design pub which is popular to locals shows you the typical sense of humour that people of Budapest had even in hard times.

Activité très intéressante. Grâce à Zoltan, nous avons découvert une page de l'histoire de la Hongrie ; et surtout nous avons pu échanger librement avec lui. Sa connaissance du sujet et sa maîtrise du français sont excellentes.

This was the best thing we did as a party of 4 while staying in Budapest. Zoltan was fantastic he really knew his stuff and explained everything about when the communist were in power and the effect on the Hungarian people. When finishing the tour he offered to take us to a typical Hungarian restaurant which we would not have found on our own and the food was delicious. Thank you so much Zoltan for making our trip interesting and we would highly recommend this tour. Dawn, Roger, Chris and Rob from York.
